after my v20 cameras stopped working verizon sent me a refurbished v20. when that wouldnt quick charge they sent a refurbished v30. i decided not to waste time setting up a new phone unless it was a new phone and upgraded to the v40 a bit earlier than i originally planned.

some questions:

can i disable the shutter sound? i could swear my v20s were silent but i may be wrong, or old.

how can i quickly get to the camera with the screen off? on previous phones you could press the down volume button twice.

EDIT found this under settings>extensions>shortcut keys

can i still take a screen grab with physical buttons?

i have had a problem with swiftkey since os 8...whenever i restart the phone the keyboard resets to its smallest layout. this was happening on my v20 and now my v40. has anyone else had or SOLVED this problem?

re: oled screen. i am coming from LCD on my previous LG and my mac computers are also LCD. so to me this new screen feels a bit yellow and washed out. ive tried various settings within the system but none make the whites white or the blacks black. am i missing a contrast button or something? do i need a third party app to adjust contrast? the warmer/cooler slider in settings doesn’t help much.

i’m sure i’ll have more questions. i’m a bit of a luddite. thank you for reading and any advice you can offer!

I can answer the screen grab question...

Volume Down and Power button at the same time to take a physical screenshot/screen grab.

Also as far as colors go, you just have to continue tweaking it to your liking. It takes a little patience but it's not too bad.

Enjoy your V40!!

Mute the phone a d shutter mutes I believe. I am using SwiftKey with no issues though I am in the beta program. Never had issues on my V30 either.

Just to add:

If you leave your phone on vibrate, the shutter doesn't make a sound.

If you press the volume down button twice while the phone is locked, it will quick launch you directly into the camera app. You can also press the Google assistant button twice to bring up the Lens application for scanning barcodes and the like.

As for the adjusting the screen colors, you have quite a few options to change the color temperature and customize it from within the display settings of the phone. No need for 3rd party app to adjust. Just go to Settings->Display->Screen color and adjust.

Hope this helps.

thank you! i didn’t see the settings wheel next to ‘expert’ in the display options. that allowed me to adjust saturation and hue. i’m still not sure this is better than LCD for me but maybe i’ll adapt. i am a photographer and all of my film images have been edited on a mac which is not OLED. i never made screen adjustments on my v20 and my photos looked fine.

another question:

can i combine the AOD (always on display) with the ‘new second screen’? i’d rather have the time battery and notifications smaller on the top of my screen than giant in the middle.

To get silent shutter, turn the phone volume to vibrate ir silent.

There is a camera shortcut if you double press the volume down button, you can open the camera. Settings may differ spending on your carrier.

Not sure about Swift Key as I use the Google GBoard.

For screenshots, press the power button + volume down button.

If you can't tweak the color on the display settings, you can try a 3rd party app which there's one called 'Color Screen Filter' which can tune the screen to a cooler color (select the blue filter, will help make the whites look better). AMOLED screens will never look as "white" as LCD and that's just how it is.. you will have to get used to it unfortunately. AMOLED can never accurately 100% depict white colors.. but the upside is blacks are very dark and looks better.. so I guess a trade-off.

i could swear my V10 and 20s didn't make a shutter sound even when the notification volume was up...annoying.

i switched to swiftkey beta and my keyboard is more stable now. thank you! gboard didn't have any layout options or was i missing something??

i have a new quirk: i discovered the floating bar a couple of days ago. and i have it pinned to a specific position on my home screen. but it seems whenever i use the keyboard (often obvi) it pushes it up the screen where it often decides to stay. anyone else have this problem and/or a solution? not a big deal. i can live without the floating bar of course.

UPDATE: i received a system update on verizon today and my prayers were answered! there is now a switch for “shutter sound” in camera settings!!

Concerning taking a screenshot, if you go to settings, display, home touch buttons, you can add a screenshot button as a fourth navigation button. Very slick!

that's cool. my fourth button is notification shade down/up. maybe i can add a 5th!?

You can disable messenger plus but I have found it best with all the LG phones I have had it is best just to ignore it.. Maybe get a launcher to hide it.. I don't know what Verizon does but anytime I have tried disabling it in the past it causes something to force close that I use.

thank you. I've just been ignoring the updates. i use nova launcher but see no way to delete or uninstall these apps.

does anyone know how to disable the strange sounds that beep in my ear whenever i receive an email or text during a call? it's pretty annoying. I think I just disabled the vibration within my texting app. but i don't see anywhere on the android settings to stop the beeps. it's a weird notification sound that is not the sound i chose for texts or email.

thank you!
