Got wifi under attack while on public wifi and at home, what should I do

[Android Central Question]

I connected my phone to public wifi at Walmart (thats where I work) and i got wifi under attack i immediately turned off the wifi on my phone. Then when i got home i connected to my home wifi and i got the same message. I tried go change my router info login the name and password and now I can't connect. The new name i created for my router don't even show up on my phone, i called the cable company they tried to rebooting it from their end and now my router messed up so im going to go replace it. But my worry is that i hope I don't get the message again whenever i connect to the new router

Just make sure you have a strong password on your router and if it allows restrict devices by their mac address.

Welcome to Android Central! What's the exact message you saw? Was it a big browser popup? If it actually warned you that you're "under attack," I'd suspect that it was a bogus browser popup ad designed to scare you into tapping a link and installing some bogus security app that's probably malware itself.

I'd more strongly suspect that someone infected the Walmart network in that store with a virus. (Unfortunately they can't just shut it down, which is the normal procedure until it gets cleaned out - because that kills Walmart Pay.)

But I'd suggest that you notify the store manager, and advise him to contact Bentonville and have corporate IT fix things, before a few thousand customers decide to sue Walmart for infecting their phones. (And you can print this out and show it to him - I'm coming up on 50 years of experience in the internet and 30 years experience on the web [the web is only about 30 years old].)

In the mean time, install Malwarebytes and a good antivirus app on your phone and let them clean it out. Then don't connect to that store's WiFi until they fix it. (And I'd be careful about connecting to any public WiFi in that area - viruses spread - that's how you spread it to your home network. [Actually, if I were in that position, I wouldn't connect to any public WiFi that I didn't know had been cleaned of that virus.])

At very worst, you're going to have to reflash the phone's firmware, then reinstall all your apps from the Play store. If you've backed any of them up, I'd delete the backups. The same with all app and data backups on your Google account.
