so with 10 installed i have been prompted several times as designed about apps wanting certain access to privacy. now i am told pay wants location access. Does it need it?

Nothing has location access in my phone and it works fine. I kill all permissions to all apps and only give them if the app doesn't work.
Try to deny and see if it works.

Doesn't need it unless you want the notification that tells you the place you're shopping at accepts Google Pay (that seems to be the only reason it would need it).

Yeah. It doesn't need it to work. But it is nice like when your at the store and it figures out your there and then your rewards card suddenly pops up in your notifications so you can just scan in at check out.

But, it doesn't need it as far as I am aware

And, since location access has been changed, any app that had location access is going to be asking for it again - you can now give it access only when the app is running. (Why it would need access when it's not running is something I haven't figured out yet, but maybe that's set up for something in 11.)

I don't think it ever needs it. But, as I said earlier, giving it access anytime can be cool because, while you're shopping or whatever, it will pull up your member card automatically (like at Kroger). It's not 100% reliable, but it's cool when it happens.

And for what it's worth (location on or not), you never actually have to open GPay to use it. Just unlock your phone and voila.

interesting. i have never had it pop up coupons for any store.
Not coupons. Scan bars for those member cards. There is a simple name for these but I can't remember. Anyway, you have to scan your membership card into GPay but if you do... And IF if happens to see that you are there and IF Google is feeling helpful, it will pop up while you're there. It's as dependable as... Well, most Google Automation. :/

And the thing is, Kroger doesn't even take GPay. But I was able to upload my loyalty card into it and GPay pulls it up automatically in my notifications half the times I go there. Kind of handy.
