Sometimes when I go into google maps and use latitude I will click on one of my friends and my phone's screen will go black and it won't do anything. The back button won't work and the only one that does is the home button a d when I hit it the phone vibrates and will go to the main screen but the gps icon won't leave the notification tray until the phone is rebooted. Even if i turn gps off it just stays there. Anyone else have this problem? Also my phone has done this about four times a week with the scrren going black and not responding. I got this phone like ten days ago. You all think the phone is ok or what? Thanks for all your help.

It is well known that the Epic's device-level GPS has locking problems in certain conditions. And some apps that use the GPS data don't deal gracefully with the underlying problem. These are Samsung firmware issues, so exchanging you phone for another Epic is not likely to fix anything.

Try using the Cold Start workaround documented here.

And hope that Samsung and Sprint comes through with a permanent fix. So far, they do not even acknowledge officially that there is a GPS bug, so there is a substantial risk it will not be fixed. If you must have a GPS that just works out of the box reliably, and are within your trial period, you may want to abandon the Epic platform.

i have the problem where the gps icon will be stuck up there sometimes when an app freezes. try entering your task manager and killing the app that was running it; in your case maps.
hold home>task manager?end process.

the reason why the gps is staying up there is because you did not exit the app. normally it should leave but because the app froze it causes a glitch or something.

but the back button problem with the phone going black is not normal and if you can replicate it on demand should take it in if youve already tried clearing data and cache.

EDIT: and to the person above and op too, i dont think there was anything wrong with the gps lock or anything gps besides the icon? am i right op?

No I actually don't have a problem with my gps locking I was playing around with latitude and it froze up and the screen went black and the only thing I could do is hit the home button. If I wait long enough I get the force close or wait pop up. I've tried going in and ending the app. And the gps icon won't go away until I reboot the phone. I also downloaded mobile ringtones and my phone would do the same thing there with the screen going black and not responding. I actually had to stop using that one cause of that. I'm just wondering if other people have problems with their phone locking up sometimes so I know if I need to exchange it. Thanks for the replies.

short answer is no. And even if other people did I'd probably still take it in get it replaced if it happens again take it in and demand some free service
