GPS Test - Epic 4G vs Captivate

I was expecting the Epic to have a better GPS because Samsung had more time to fix the issue!

As long as sprint nav works Ill be happy. When will those GPS tests come out on video?

Sprint Nav is completely awesome. We got lost once after going on the wrong freeway. My GPS only works when you are at a stand still (I hate that GPS), and had I had my iPhone there instead of my EVO, I would have been screwed. I owe a giant thanks to Sprint Nav that day.

Sprint nav IMO is awesome. yea theres been times where i was driving on a bridge and it told and showed me i was off track andin the water but it picks it right up and it never failed me. I've use it always and i'm never lst. I even love the eta , it always ajust itself and the time is always correct. Now i will say i never had any other gps. My parents have one its ok but you cant serf the internet and make calls on :)

Yeah I use sprint nav (always has been good to me) and google maps for traffic. I wont be using google gps.

Wow I thought the general consensus is Google Maps is superior to Sprint Nav, you guys feel otherwise?

I haven't used Sprint Nav, looking forward to trying it next week when my Epic arrives. :)

Yes, please elaborate on why the hell I would use Sprint Nav over Google Maps.

I have tried google maps, sprint nav, and iGO for android on a trip once. The sprint nav routed very similar the iGO app. Both seemed to routed better than the google maps. Google maps kept routing me through small neighborhood streets while iGO routed me through main streets which are much faster (yes the settings were set to fastest route on all).

The devices I was running were
1st EVO 4G: google maps
2nd EVO 4G: sprint nav
3rd Archos 5 Internet Tablet: iGO for android

Shouldn't we be comparing Sprint Nav to Google Nav, and not Google Maps?

Google maps and nav are linked together. You find your address in maps and when you hit get directions nav fires up, so to me they are the same. But yeah google nav. :p

Well, with my experience ,Sprint Nav is just far more superior, but of course, I didn't use Google Maps too in depth.

When I say maps, I also mean navigation as well.

Wow that's terrible!
Radius around GPS point is vast , looks like 1 mile Tower triangulation.

EDIT:
1 Mile

I hate correcting my self but hey I'm a stand up guy

Looking further into Breifmobile testing I found that Epic GPS target distance is = to EVO & Blackberry 8330 - 9630 & 9650 which is great

"Quote BreifMobile"
We later tested the device’s GPS using an application called “My Tracks” by the Google Team.
The application records GPS data and tracks it. We found that the device was pretty accurate, but not perfect. Always within 5-10 feet of the actual car. It struggled on turns to stay on the road, and the compass seemed way out of whack the whole time. But we think this My Tracks test proves the GPS is more than adequate.
You should rarely see Google Navigation losing you on a road.

Samsung Epic 4G GPS Test &raquo BriefMobile

With Google maps using EVO it put me any ware from 2 - 7 meters = 6.56 feet - 16.4 feet when fix was complete
Epic is well within that GPS target distance so hey sorry I jumped the gun passing judgment before looking into it further.

I use both. I use sprint nav for navigation and google maps for traffic. I would never use the nav feature in google maps after how well sprint nav has been to be.

We are.

I use whatever I find at the time. I don't usually think about GPS too much unless we're trying to find a certain location (obviously). Although now that you mention it, I might try your method, sphinxx. I'd love to have details on traffic in my area.

Google Nav has LANDSCAPE support on Android phones (not just sliders- worked great on EVO.) the Map is just better- traffic is accurate, and there's a rerouting feature where you can choose different routes illustrated on the map when there's congestion. Sprint nav has none of these. (Maybe for Epic, they added landscape support- but Pre sure didn't have it)

Also Sprint Nav takes forever to load on Android (no idea why).

I loved Sprint Nav on pre- because prior- I had nothing- and the voice is better than Google Nav's robotic voice- but IMHO Google's app overall just has better features- that being said- it crashed the Evo I had ( your mileage may vary) constantly causing REBOOTS! I wiped the evo numerous times to no avail - again, perhaps my EVO was borked- but Google Nav and the Evo I had (and the other 2 family members all bought at the same time) could not get the app to work reliably.

If Epic can run Google Nav + pandora or stitcher, then get a call, then hang up - and keep navigating- like I could on my pre- I'll be a happy Epic owner.

The best thing about Google Maps Nav is that its cached. I get my directions still while in a phone call. Sprint Nav can't do this, and is far inferior in my opinion for lacking this feature alone in a network where talk and data aren't combined in a 3G area... also it works even if you have no data (as long as you set up the path when you did). Very Very nice feature.
