Graphics processor

Snapdragon phones including Evo 4G: Adreno 200
Palm Pre, including Droid, Droid X, and iphone: PowerVR

PowerVR is a lot more powerful than Adreno's.

There's a lot more to it though.

Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7 million-14million triangles/sec, 500Mpx/s
Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8?50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec, 133Mpx/s
iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 million triangles/sec
Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec

Most 3d applications are fill rate limited. So the fill rate is the more important number. As you can see, that number is lower...
The PowerVR probably has support for lighting and better extension support.

Apparently however, things can get better.
Smaller textures could be used to make up for the weaker fill rate.

Edit:
There are some other things involved. Cyanogenmod on the N1 does help a lot.
Somebody told me that games have worked much better for them. They've reported a 5-15 fps increase in certain 3d games.... so things can be done.

More proof that gaming can be a bit more optimized... Check out:
1. Raging Thunder II
2. Exzeus Arcade

Exzeus is beautiful and doesn't lag on my Evo. Apparently it was made using the Native Development Kit ground up.

I've done my research. :)

So basically the evo cant play games as good as the palm pre?
Sadly, not always.
I didn't like that set of news when I first got my Evo.

However, it's fine. I've found a lot of games that are graphically intensive and work well on my Evo.
Gameloft isn't that lazy. Games like Nova now work well on the Evo. Though there are certain games that run, but have framerate issues. That could be because of the 30fps cap though.

On top of that, Froyo should increase average fps by 5-15... making those games that were having framerate issues play pretty well.

Wow thats depressing....I was thinking the evo was a monster but I guess that isnt the case.

See my sig. If games are what you're buying a phone for, the Evo probably isn't your best bet. If the 1,000 other things you can use a phone for are more important than games, the Pre most definitely isn't your best bet.

Please read my post. There's more to just saying that one GPU is better than the other.
You'll still be able to play high end 3d games.

YouTube - 100 ANDROID GAMES IN TWO VIDEO ( Nexus version )

Check out the first game, Exzeus Arcade. Very graphic intensive game. I have it on my Evo and it runs smoothly.

It's weak in terms of other high end phones out there, sure. However, it can still hold its own when games are optimized themselves.

Edit: Here's Raging Thunder II running on Evo's lil' bro, Nexus one:

Runs smoothly and has great 3d graphics.

For all of you looking to buy a phone for gaming, you might want to just buy yourself a PSP and call it a day!

Just a thought!

It is, in every area except 3D gaming. If it's that important to you, you might want to reconsider Android entirely.

I have a Pre and I was excited to play 3D games on it, but I found that they were kind of boring. I really like having buttons. Call me old school. :)

I have tried a few 3D action games on my Evo, but I still found them boring. I have found that games like Diner Dash 2 and the airplane landing games are much more enjoyable when I am on the move. I will leave my hardcore games to my desktop.

I wouldn't mind a better gpu for video recording though.

I totally agree with you....No one should expect anything crazy from a phone. It doesn't matter if another phone has it or not. It's a phone people, not a handheld console.

I was actually surprised at many games I could get:

-Exzeus Arcade
-Hungry Shark (funfun)
-Let's Golf (gameloft, beware)
-Raging Thunder II
-Slimeball Speedway
-Tiki Towers
-Caligo Chaser

There are obviously others. Those are pretty good graphics wise. I don't like old school games, but there exist some.

the mobile versions don't compare to what's on the psp, in terms of longevity and graphics. Also the psp games don't come close to the console type of games. I own a psp and a ps3/wii, so I would know.

I just want to be able to play that Angry Birds game that is coming to android. If I can play that on either the Evo or Epic, I will be a happy man.

The Pre had a lower GPU then Evo. A more colorful screen, but not a better GPU. Then the CPU makes the Pre a paper weight. Show me a 3d game for the Pre, that there is an Android version of it, that plays better on the Pre.

Lower GPU? The Pre's GPU does less triangles/second, but it has a higher fill rate. That's why Asphalt 5 and other gameloft games were ported within a few days... It didn't need optimization or different textures because the fill rate allowed it to run like it is.

Anyway, Asphalt 5 and Assassin's Creed are two games that lag on the Evo... but run smoothly on the Pre.
However, Gameloft seemed to have optimized them recently. Check out the thread I just made for more info.

Anyway, check this out for more proof that Pre's GPU is darn good.

Here's a video before Gameloft updated their games. Look how laggy Assassin's Creed is on the Evo.
Here's the video of it running on the Pre:

See the difference?

Actually NO, just no! The GPU on the Pre is a lot better than the one on the snapdragon.
