Green Dot, Instant Messaging???

Ok, I am stumped on this. My girlfriend and I got the SF a week ago and saw one day there were green dots next to my name and her name on each others phones.

I found this morning that you coud open it up and send an instant message. Is that google talk? If not what app is it and can you create a short cut to open it up quick? The only way i can get iyt open is to go through the contact list to her name.

I also wanted to ask what it meant by the "star" on a contact? I see you can turn it onb and off but what does it mean.

The green dot is for google talk, and the star indicates favorites

Is there a way to open the application up quickley? Or do I need to download the app from the market?

I could not find a way to open it wothout going through the contact list.

I found it, the icon just says "Talk" on it.
