AC Question

I got a text from an unknown number, with what appeared to be an area code of 588. That area code appears to be assigned to Mexico. The text just said:

OPEN File type: text/vcard.

Like it wanted me to add this number to my contacts.

I didn't open it because I didn't know who it was.

Very soon after, I received a text with a picture from my daughter, which appeared to come from this same number.

I called her and she said she had created a Group in the Android stock messages app for Family to send group texts and pictures.

So I surmise that for some reason this Group got assigned this weird number? But why would it do that?

I got the picture even without opening the first text, so do I need to add it to my contacts?

Anyone else ever heard of this?

Hey I am having this issue, or rather my friend is. She has Verizon as a carrier and is using the verizon text app. All of a sudden her phone number is showing up as [number deleted], which is a Mexico area code. She created a group contact list and this happened. Now, when she sends a group text, it shows as this number, plus the other contacts are not recognized as names, just phone numbers. I found this on a Verizon forum, but they never showed a solution.

Hey, just wanted to bump this thread because the exact same thing that happened to 1karrun's friend happened to me last night when I started a group text within the Verizon Message+ app. I have searched for answers online, but haven't come across anything yet. Any updates?

This just happened to a friend of mine who included me in a group message. I cannot find an answer as to why it is happening online, and as its July of 2019 as I write this, it has been several years. I have seen questions dating back to at least 2017.
So WHY ARE group address getting a randomized 588 phone number instead of the admin's phone?

I just had the same thing happen to me.

I created a group, sent my text and got no response from anyone.

So I texted everyone, individually to ask if they received my text. They all thought it was a SPAM TEXT!

I happen to have Verizon as my carrier, so is this just happening with Verizon accounts, or what.

My concern is that it's still happening after apparently several years of this issue.

What can be done to fix this issue?

Verizon seems to be the common denominator here... Maybe they have a server in Mexico (hence the Mexican number). I'd be chatting with them about this...
