Group texting split thread replies back to everyone, why?

I'm using Handcent and when I send a group text that is large the replies go back to the entire group. I have split thread enabled. This doesn't seem to be the case for smaller texts (maybe 20-50 characters). How do I send larger texts to a group and only have the replies come back to me, not the entire group?

I don't think that this is possible.
