The phone & screen still works, but I'm having a difficult time using / reading it. Can't seem to find a valid online source for a DIY screen replacement, and the cost to have a local shop do it is more than the deductible of my Sprint insurance plan. I really hate shelling out $20+ at Best Buy for a screen protector, especially since I should have purchased an Otterbox, so I'm looking for some suggestions / solutions. I hear one alternative is to use clear packing tape as a screen cover?

If it was me I would buy one on Ebay. No matter what you do, when you look at your phone you're going to know that it's broke. If you can wait.... I guarantee you that as soon as the S4 is released you are going to see Ebay flooded with the S3.

Either you get it fixed or live with it. I sent mine to Samsung it cost more than the Sprint deductible but I didn't want a refurbished phone

That might be a viable option. It's released on the 14th, but who knows how long until the carriers get it.

Thanks!

Yeah same thing happened to me when I had my Evo 4G. Had a case on it and it just slipped out of hand and dropped at that perfect angle. I lived with it 'till my upgrade but it was and eyesore even though it still worked.

Call around to some the local phone stores in your area (not the corporate stores). Some of them may do repairs and you can probably get the screen replaced for under a $100.00.
