GS4 vs One: Made up my mind.... HTC One it is

likewise to the OP ... i opted for the One myself (',d) ...

coming from an iphone 4 ... i was really torn between the S4 and the One ... but after sieving through plenty of threads here & elsewhere ... i felt the One better suited my needs ...
still ... a fair bit of a learning curve jumping from iOS to Android ... not giving up! i am GOING to struggle through this & reap the rewards later ;p

really loving the camera! & with regards to the many dissenters ... Blinkfeed really isn't all that bad! ;)

cheers to all the posters here who have been such wonderful sources of education ... & i DO enjoy the many banters ;p

Welcome to Android and AC. You made a great choice in operating systems and with the One. Please don't be afraid to reach out with questions. While we may bicker a bit, the one thing we agree on is that Android is the best OS for us.

I don't experience the graininess you describe. I do shoot with sharpness -1, maybe that would help you? Or are you zooming to take the pic? I never zoom for a shot. The pics look clear and grain free at 100% on my computer.

Nope. I never zoom with a phones camera. Ever. I've seen great pictures posted but I just don't see the same results. I've had 2 Ones and the exact same results. I haven't tried sharpness at - 1 but will try that.

I really want the One over the S4 for many reasons? BUT my biggest hold back one that will most likely get me stricken with rotten tomatoes. Its the darn power button! For me its a pain to hit the top of the phone, I?m used to either press the ?home? button on an iPhone or S3, to awaken the device. :-(

I wish you could just double tap the screen like the Noika 920

You can get auto screen on. Works great.

It's quite difficult to get used to.

I've never really found it to be that big of an issue. I actually like the fact that I don't always accidentally wake my screen by pressing a home button. To each their own. As stated on a previous post Auto Screen On works really well

Just flash a custom kernel and you can double tap to turn the screen on..it works great!!;)

Does this functionality consume much battery life on standby?

I havent used it long enough to give an accurate response with regards to impact on battery. I tried it out for a day. While it worked well, I really have no issue pushing the power button to wake the screen.

I'm still on the fence. I love both devices but I'm having a hard time getting past the camera quality. I dont expect dslr quality but it seems most of my pics come out very grainy even if just barely zoomed in on my phone screen.

Your problem is clear, aggie. Smartphone camera aren't really any good on digital zoom, and only being 4mp the one is not great here. Try to think about getting closer for shots or using the camera with the manual settings and I'm sure you will see good results. I almost never zoom in to take pics, and my s3 is grainy too when I do.

I don't zoom in to take pics either. Should have worded my post better. My pics look very grainy when even just ever so slightly enlarged on my phone screen. Im wondering if perhaps I just have a bad device as I've seen some really good pics posted from this camera.

Ah, apologies. Maybe try playing with the manual settings? Has it had the update, I believe that affected the camera.

I love the crispness of the screen on the one and the stock icons. Sense looks clean. If I had an upgrade, I probably would've bought that

I am wanting to keep my One but I am leaning towards swapping it out for the S4.

I am one of the few people that actually like Blink Feed. It is a great way to grab a quick news article while waiting in line, etc. Sense, ehh...it is fine but is not a weight the decision either way. I like the power button on top and the volume buttons on the right. The build quality of the phone is top notch. Call clarity is great - with LTE it is the first phone in as long as I can remember that I can make calls from any room in my house. The speakers are great but to be honest I do not often use my phone speakers to listen to music so is not that big of a deal. The battery life is very good compared to my S2 and charging does not seem that much slower. Although a faster charge would be nice.

I have not really taken any pictures with it but I need to test out the camera including zoom. Yes I use the digital zoom on my phone and on my S2 it was acceptable to send someone a quick picture to show them something or for facebook. That is the level I judge the camera by. If it is a picture I really care about I will use a real camera.

I do wish that there was an SD slot. I can live without it but I spend enough time in the air that I would like to have the additional storage for music as well as not having to worry how many pictures I take and keep on the phone.

So now to my concerns that are tempting me to jump ship:

  • First one is minor but a bit annoying - the lock screen says "My Location" instead of the name of the city
Waze opens then closes right away. I have tried to uninstall & reinstall
I was making a deposit to my bank using the phone and received a message that location could not be verified so it would not allow me to make a deposit. I have never received this message on any other phone. I walked outside, got a GPS lock, walked back in and everything worked.
I am concerned that I am going to continue to have location based issues.
Hopefully AT&T will release an update shortly and address the issues.

I still have time before I have to swap the phone out but I am thinking of spending more time with the S4.

I am continuing to test drive the HTC One and I still really one to like it. I am hoping that the Google Play 4.1.10 update takes care of most of my complaints.

Yesterday I took a number of pictures with the phone. What I noticed is that with any kind of zoom the quality became pretty unacceptable. Now I do not expect much from digital zoom and do not use it on a camera. However using zoom on the HTC one resulted in pictures significantly worse than using zoom on my old Galaxy S2. In every other way the HTC One is a significant improvement over the GS2 but I am a bit disappointed in the camera.

I do agree that Samsung's camera is superior overall. I don't even think that's arguable but the key for me was the One camera being sufficient in most situations. There are rarely situations where I take pics where the GS4 would be 10x better. Maybe slightly, but not much when considering the other things I prefer about the device. Here's a pic I took almost fully zoomed in on a spider on the side of my house. I was standing about 6 feet away. Is it the best? Certainly not. But it came out good enough to capture what I wanted.
