GSM Galaxy Nexus gets HOT! Exact values........

I need to know if 40-50 degrees is considered normal....most other posts refer to "hot" which is a wide range. Can anyone confirm, as it gets really hot near the speaker, earpiece which according to a previous post that it is where the radios are, though this is when charging. It gets hot to the point where its uncomfortable to hold. It has a case, which might or not worsen the issue, is this normal? Should I keep the case in these scenarios or not? Thanks!
