Guide for Rooting 2.1

I followed the directions and rooted my phone last night. I had charged the battery overnight, but within 2 hours of unplugging it the battery was already drained 49 per cent. I checked to make sure GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth were off, and they were. Any ideas on what can be the problem or how to fix it?

Are you running the stock rom? Do you have twitter and email set to sync every 15min?

I'm using the stock rom. All I did last night was just the rooting in the instructions above. I don't use twitter, but email is set to sync every 15 minutes I think, but that didn't drain the battery this quickly for the week I had the 2.1 update without having rooted it.

So I checked the awake and up time, and they are exactly the same (well, off by one second). Unfortunately I plugged it in to charge before trying to see what has been using the battary, so I can't see that.

FYI, if you install the update released today for hero... You will be stuck and this new method will no longer work. Make sure you block OTA updates, that last step is now very important rather than just recommended.

Huge thanks for the warning. I had done that last night, and since no one was complaining about uptime on the instructions forum I assumed I had screwed up somewhere and was planning (when I finished charging it) on restoring the nandroid backup I had made before I disabled the OTA updates. At the current moment though battery dies in three hours.

Rooting should effect anything with the battery. Have you installed some apps?

Hi I'm an android newbie (but some experience with linux)

I'm confused how the OTA update erases root access. I would think that if you ran an exploit and gave yourself root, you could retain root permissions even if the exploit is patched. Unless the OTA update resets all permissions to normal...

Anyone in the know care to explain?

Sorry for the broad question.

From what i get on the size of the file, its probably just a build.prop and a boot.img.The boot.img would over write the old and patch the exploit.

any benefits with this? From what I take, its probably a security thing. The exploit for 2.1 is a Sprint app thing, not a Google/HTC thing, correct? So this patch serves no other purpose other than to patch an exploit, correct? and serves no actual performance increase.

I don't think there is any benefit,i was going to try and look into it more. I think they are just really trying to lock down the hero.
If it true that its only 3mb,our boot.img is like 2mb.Also i would think it's sprint since it was ota.

I dl the new version from htc,it says .5 on site but it says .6 when you dl it.So i got something new to tear apart we'll see if they made any adjustments to the things that were busted in the original 2.1 release.

sweet, I was running ICED OC yesterday and it was fine, but on the third boot, it became unusable :/ Man it must suck to have the official 2.1 where you can't do anything about it.

i got it half way tore apart maybe i was wrong system.img is bigger(not much),hopefully there some goodys inside

I did root the device using that method. But every hour or so it loses data connection. The weather widget does not update and I cant view a webpage. I have wifi turned off. I havent added any apps.

Any ideas or suggestions?
When it happens toggle aip plane mode on and off.Rooting shouldn't effect the connection.

Ok I have done that twice this afternoon. And it does seem to restore the connection. But is it normal for that to happen more than once in a few hours?

So... I've been holding off on updating to 2.1 until the root came out. Now that it is finally out a new update happens. So if I update to 2.1 through the 2.1 thread here will my hero automatically go for the new update afterwards?

Those more knowledgeable please correct me if i'm wrong:

If you follow everything in the instructions, you will disable OTA updates. At that point, you will receive but not apply any updates. Thereby keeping the device rooted.
