[Guide] How-to root Evo 4G gingerbread! via Revolutionary

OK.... everything went fine until I went to install SU. When I go to install from zip it does not show up, I have tried over and over again to get it to show up but it doesnt. When I plug my phone in as usb drive though it is there. Not sure what to try to do now. any help would be appreciated.

OK.... not sure what I did but got superuser installed.

I had an LG Optimus S that was rooted and running CM7 until yesterday I finally got an Evo! I didn't have any problem rooting it but just had a quick question, since I have the newer evo 4g that is updated to 2.3.3., can i flash any of the available roms out there for the evo 4g? or will only certain ones work for the 2.3.3.? sorry if this has already been answered, i couldn't seem to find any info on this so i thought i'd ask you guys. Thanks.

is there some thing wrong with my SDcard that needs to be addressed before clockwork will take on my phone?
Or is there something else wrong with my EVO?

Now, is it just me, or does no one else know/care about this issue? I doubt we're the only 2.

I was able to install the custom recovery onto my phone, but for some reason Rom manager keeps saying that my phone is not rooted. What's the deal?

rooted my evo 4g just today with this very same process from([slatedroid.com/topic/21538-guide-root-evo-4g-android-233/][GUIDE] ROOT EVO 4G - Android 2.3.3 - SlateDroid.com[/url]) and root took perfect first time, this was done on an evo that had the 2.3.3 update. thanks to your write up as well.

Im curious if anybody has made a thread pertaining flashing roms from recovery & how to properly do it? Alot of people are pretty lost on that...

im all psyched i rooted my evo4g again, this is my 2nd evog , first time around i never had any problems with all this force.quiting ? Can someone tell me why anything i click on force closes?
Its driving me nuts, Ive tried a few didnt roms now and none seems to work

There is plenty of evidence here that Revolutionary works, so I must have a problem with my process. It is totally frustrating. I have read through these posts and tried all the hints, but not go. I have been a computer user and sometimes programmer since the CPM days. It isn't like I should be incompetent to get this to work, but apparently so. Anyway, no matter how careful I am it wont accept my beta key. Oh yes, I have removed HTC sync, and redownloaded the drivers and Revolutionary. Guess I will have to wait for a stable version to come out.

I have a question, Im not new to rooting, i just got this evo today. I had an optimus s rooted running cm7. But what the h*ll is a HBOOT and how do i find it so it can enter it in Revolutionary?

Hey all,

So I got s-off just fine using Revolutionary, installed CWM, and got SU on my sdcard, but when I try and install SU via recovery mode (install zip from sdcard -> find su -> install su) it tries to install and aborts because the file su~~~whatever-unsigned.zip is "bad." It literally just says it's bad. (lol) Has anyone else run into this? Maybe a bad file? I just downloaded it from the link in the initial instructions but I've tried a couple of times and had no success. Am I missing something?

to get into your HBOOT you have to shut the phone off, completely off, and then just hold down the volume down button and the power button till a white screen pops up. basically thats your Hboot and the version number will be on the top.

I didnt have this problem, either the file your getting is actually bad or its not being found. Other then that I really don't know how to fix that problem sorry :( you can try to get the download right off of XDA that could possibly help, but you would have to search for it.

Ya it's weird, I think it must be something with my phone specifically, because it's definitely the same file that everyone else has been downloading from the link in the original post.

More info: Obviously I'm getting s-off and trying to root from 2.3.3 otherwise I wouldn't be using Revolutionary. I tried foolishly installing the SuperUser app from the Market after I rooted, wasn't able to update the binary or gain actual root etc, so I read up more and realized that I need to actually flash it from recovery. Is there any chance that having installed it previously would mess things up?

Also, if anyone downloads the same file from the original post, let me know if it works for them so we can rule out the file itself being bad. I'll keep digging around for answers when I have time and post if I find anything.

i didn't know superuser was in the market O.o haha
I don't think anything will happen if you've had it previously, if your rooting now it should mean that superuser was uninstalled if you have been rooted before otherwise you wouldnt be needing revolutionary. But files usualy have a tendency to overwrite themselves if you try to download the same file twice, so if its still on your phone for some reason i would think it would over write itself or say you have an error when you try to install su. but if you cant see superuser in your app menu I don't believe you will have any trouble installing the su apk

When I tried to root with superuser from the market, it didn't work. I had to grab the apk and sideload it from my sd in recovery before it worked right.

It didn't seem to screw anything up with that previous install, but I just couldn't get root permissions to work.

I'm assuming by "sideload" you mean just put on the SD card when it's mounted to my computer and then run the .zip from recovery mode. Unless the file is wrong or my original process of gaining s-off didn't work properly even though I definitely have s-off, there must be some weird problem with my phone. Is anyone more knowledgeable able to diagnose maybe? I'll try re-running revolutionary when I get home and see what happens when I try to flash SU again.

Alright, actually had some time just now to acquire superuser 3.0 and sideloaded it (actually installed via dropbox haha) and it worked to install from recovery mode! Must have been something wrong with the previous version I was trying to use. Rooted just fine now!

Hey guys..new here..i just made an account :) but when i try to go into recovery, i get an green arrow. then the picture with an evo, with a red triangle..if someone could tell me why this is happening? i cannot get superuser until i figure it out..so help would be great...have a nice day!!
thanks

Usualy the red triangle means you do not have root, before trying to get super user did you try revolutionary's s-off tool and did all the steps that were in the first post to this topic?

Here's my problem. I got my Evo right when they came out, and have HBOOT 2.10.001. Revolutionary asks for hboot version, but they only have 2.15.001 and 2.16.001.

What do?

Edit: I was rooted before, but had to take my phone in to get the speaker and charge port repaired today, so I RUU'd and dropped root. RUU put my on version 2.2 if that matters.

Edit #2: My googlefu is good tonight. Used unrevoked3 (since I wasn't cursed with the evil 2.3) and was done in like 10 minutes.
