[GUIDE][MAC/PC/LINUX][4.2] Unlock, Root and Flash Recovery

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

glad you got it working. figures win8 would cause some discrepancy ...

good to know! now go rom that thing :)

Re: Can't install drivers

Thank you very much for your quick response.

I tried a couple of other drivers, without success. I couldn't wait any longer, and just installed Windows 7 32bit on a separate partition on my computer, used the method in your first post, and everything work fine. So the problem was either with Windows 8 (*beta*) or the 64bit version.

OT: I need Windows 7 on my computer anyways, since the W8 beta is not real stable, and the W8 Metro interface doesn't work well on a non-touch machine.

I'm on Win 8 and having the same problem. Guess I'm glad it isn't just me. I'll post a fix if I can find one.

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

Thanks for the Root guide. I ran through it in minutes without a hitch. And I'm a technological idiot.

BUT ... I need help!

I decided to use ROM manager to install the CWM back up and flashed CWM recovery 6.0.1.0. All good.

I then found out this means I would lose OTA updates, which I didnt want at all. So followed the guide to reflash 4.1.1 stock recovery. All went well again.

BUT - ROM manager is still saying that I have CWM flashed and when I try to access recovery from the app directly, I get the android will a red triangle and exclamation mark and nothing else.

So I powered down and rebooted into bootloader manually (power and volume keys), then tried to select recovery manually. This makes the tablet hang endlessly on the Google Screen (with the unlocked symbol underneath). I am able to power down and reboot into normal function though.

1. Am I back on Stock Revovery now, or am I left with no recovery, and if so, does this mean I wont get updates?

2. How do I sort this out if it is a problem?

I am using terminal in mac.

thanks in advance for any help!

What you are seeing there is the stock recovery, if that's what you wanted then you got it :)

Additionally, I just tried Quick Boot to get in to recovery. All I got was android with red triangle :(

Ahh! Brilliant! Thanks. So all is good in the Nexus garden. Thanks. That'll teach me for meddling in things I don't understand :)

It works, just plug it in once it's shut down :). The adb reboot recovery should also work just fine.

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

I apologize out of the gate if this seems like a redundant question in this thread, but I'm raw at rooting and I want to be sure before I do anything else. I'm a bit confused checking all the questions and answers here.

I unlocked and rooted my N7 as per the first two sets of instructions and it worked great. I was able to install and run apps needing root access. Then after powering down and up again I was prompted by JB to download and install the 4.1.1 update. I clicked ok without thinking about it. When it rebooted I find out it's not rooted anymore.

Is it possible to root what I've now got again, and if I do does that mean I can't do OTA updates?,

Thanks.

Yes root it just like before, you only need to do the step where you flash the su.zip in recovery. I'm actually surprised you got the OTA with a custom recovery installed.. Usually that will prevent it from installing.. But you can always flash the stock recovery later for future OTAs.

I had this problem though I am using Ubuntu Linux, fix is to use
sudo ./fastboot-linux oem unlock

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

Yes fastboot commands in Ubuntu require the sudo preface.

Yeah I left the Linux commands pretty bare bc I figured 99% of Linux users know their way around fast boot ... but I can update if it'll help :)

I can?t connect my new-bought Nexus to my PC XP.
Maybe through a USB stick. Ah? no. ASUS has decided it was superfluous.

Is there anyone who want to buy a second-hand 1 day old Nexus 7?

Antonio has it right, Microsoft took the MTP driver down. Can someone upload it. I think Google is fighting to keep people from rooting their Nexus 7 so a USB stick can be recognized using the mini USB port. Don?t be evil ? Google.

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at?

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

I'm on a mac, and the terminal says waiting for device. what does that mean?

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

Usually means the device isn't in boatloader mode: you are connected via USB, tab has USB debugging on, then you put tab in boot loader mode before you initiate the terminal commands.

Let me know if that helps :)

Re: [GUIDE][MAC][PC][LINUX] How to Unlock, Root and Flash Recover

It looks like my computer can't contol my Nexus 7. I've tried all the different driver installations in the toolbox. The 2nd and 3d version with manual installation seems to work when I look at device manager. But when my computer tries to reboot my Nexus, nothing happens. I've made sure that USB debugging is allowed.

Any tips about what I could do?
