I spent all day researching/trying to make the HTC Mail app push for my Hotmail accounts. I've noticed that it worked for some people, but mostly not at all for others. K-9/Maildroid wasn't doing it for me either. Finally I figured it out, WITHOUT the need to root my phone.

Note: If you are rooted or have the update, just download and install the .apk that's attached at the bottom of this post and skip to the Setting up push email section

What you need:

The latest USB driver for the Inspire, HTC Sync. Do not run HTC Sync after it installs, you only need it for the driver.

You are probably well aware that AT&T blocks 3rd party app downloads so download Android Sideload Wonder Machine . Follow the instructions there.

The original Android email app (attached). Install it with Android Sideload Wonder Machine. It will show up with the name Email in your apps afterwards.

Solution

Thanks to InsaneNutter at Digiex.net. His guide was the basis for my fix. Click the link for pictures if you need it.

Setting up push email:

1.First load the Email application up, not the HTC Mail application.
Enter your Hotmail / Windows Live email address and password, then click manual setup.

2.When asked what type of email account it is select exchange

3.For domain / username enter a forward slash followed by your email address, for example: \youremail@hotmail.com
The server is m.hotmail.com (even if you have an @live.com/@msn.com)
Tick the box that says "Use secure connection (SSL)" and "Accept all SSL certificates" and click next

4.For email checking frequency select: Automatic (Push)

Its up to you what you select for the other options. I chose one day, default account (for my first, main account), and notify. I didnt need the contacts or calendar sync, personally.

5.Now give your email account a name so you know what it is. Example: Personal, Business, etc.

And you're done. Menu>Account Settings brings up more customization if you need it (signature, names, syncing, etc).

New emails will hit your phone's notification area and anything deleted/marked read will reflect in the server. I sent a few test emails and everything worked beautifully. Some even showed up faster than on my Windows Live Mail client.

Don't know if this will work on other phones/tablets/builds (just got my Inspire a few days ago) but hey, its a start. Please leave a thanks if it works for you or let me know if there's any problems.

Question, all this will be using the stock mail aplication that have the phone right? the same one like when you set up the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and other (POP3/IMAP) or was to be used on aplications like Maildroid, etc?

Can I look all my folders on my hotmail account and select the ones that I want to sync and storage on the phone? Just like I do on my old Samsung i-637windows mobile?

Thanks

No, what's on the Inspire is the stock HTC mail app. I have attached the stock Android email application (see the bottom of the first post) found on untouched, nonskinned Android devices (like the Nexus 1/Nexus S). My method uses the app I attached.

You can switch between folders. As far as I know you cant individually choose what folders you want to snyc, but you can choose the amount of emails you can sync (for the entire account) up to 1 month.

I hope that answers your questions :)

Do you know why when exchange sync is set to "push" for a hotmail account it syncs every second or so, this on an un-rooted and also on a rooted HTC Inspire 4G? is there a solution to the push issue without having to select a set time? ie. every 15 minutes or Manual Check.

It is annoying not to say it drains the battery faster.

I followed all the steps and it seemed to work, but my inbox just shows a blank screen, or rather, there is no inbox. I can send emails, but I can't see any that have come in (because of the blank screen). DO you have any ideas? I have an HTC Inspire 4G via ATT.

Ok, I figured it out. Under menu, applications & sync, set Background data to sync at anytime. Mine was disabled. As soon as I added that, it synced.

This isn't working for me. Everytime I try to set it up, it tells me it failed to create the account, please try again later.

How about POP mail accounts? I don't know why push can't be an option in the stock app. How hard would it be for them to update it if so many people are wanting it?

Should work on non-root, after the update. Did work before update with sideload wonder machine. This is a true "push", which is within 1-2 mins (based on connection), not in 15 mins. I dont have battery issues with wifi on or off.

Are you sure your email is an exchange account?

I dont have a POP mail account, so I haven't tested it. You should try a regular setup with this app first for that account and see if push is an option. Laziness?

Hotmail is why I migrated to gmail over six years ago. I've tried to convince my wife to use gmail many times. Nonetheless, she still uses her hotmail as her primary. I still have mine but only for cannon fodder.

Thank you for posting this. It has saved me time. I went through more trouble setting up the ssl port settings when we first got the phones just to make hotmail barely functional.

If only the android email app had come preloaded or att had allowed unknown sources from the beginning.

The only negative that I can see with this is the max one month synchronize.

My main fodder email is a hotmail account and so is my college email (the college has some deal with exchange) so that was my main reason for seeking out a fix. Glad I could help.
