Seeing as that I am converting to my first android phone (nOOb!!!) I have been reading about Google Voice and all the features and functions. I have also read numerous time that GV is deeply integrated into android as well as the X. But what I don't understand is how, what does that mean?

I've seen nothing within the DX reviews that shows some sort of integration other then there is an app you can download. Not sure I would call an App you can pull deep integration. Maybe once it's on the phone it can access your established contacts and the like and thats what they mean. The iphone at one point had an app for a week as well and nobody called that deep integration?

just like gmail, set up your account (google voice is an app you have to download) and it will be used for your primary voicemail. pretty simple and awesome :)

Android devices let you choose if you want the carrier voicemail or if you want to use your google voice, so once you set GV up on your phone it basically becomes a part of it :)

Also, apps on android can be much more deeply integrated than apps on the iPhone. For example, it's possible to replace the keyboard with one you downloaded, I would call that deeply integrated.

Does the text function through GV only work from within the GV app, or does the native DX text client also see and have the ability to text through GV? Is that part of the integration?

I like having my VM separate from my texts if possible! If thats the case, maybe I'm stating the obvious, there is no reason to get a text plan as I could use GV for free texting? If you can't and all texting is done via the GV app maybe thats a small price to pay to save $20 on the text plan. Wonder if the notifications for texts work the same from within GV as I'd assume they would work over the standard texting application.

Does this app notify you when you receive a new sms? My blackberry app would only refresh at a point and put up an icon no audible alert

i believe this is customizable on any device with the app, including blackberrys. You may need to change your notification options.

how can it replace your messaging if people still send texts to the number? you can stop the phone from receiving them but doesn't it still count toward your text limit?

maybe it changed with an update but not with the one I had. I ditched my BB so who cares now

This.
Do you have to have people send SMS to your phone via your GV number so you don't get charged for an incoming SMS by VZW?

Exactly, that's my understanding. People text your GV number and it routes via that SMS to you.

Even google touts this feature see here: Google Voice for your phone

And if what that previous post said is true then you can have your native SMS app tie to GV and so you wouldnt skip a beat.

Mind you, I have 0 experience with hits, hopefully someone with working knowledge visits this thread to lay out any Pros and Cons of how the system works. But from what I see things look positive. If it works great I save $20 a month. If it stinks I add the text plan back to the phone!

What would stink is getting everyone you text with to add your GV phone number to their phone. I've had my mobile number for 9 years now, I don't want to even think about changing it.
