so i just successfully rooted my sprint galaxy s3! I know, go me! right? just kidding... lol anyway ive been browsing through the forum looking for things to play around with, but it seems that most posts refer to the name of the rom which doesnt really let me know what exactly it does. so i was wondering if any one could point me in the right direction for a large list or other sites with roms/hacks i can mess around with. PS i havent experimented with rooting since the palm pre came out so ive been out of the loop for a few years.

Welcome to the forum :)

This is the link to the Sprint XDA forum that has all the available roms you can flash. If it's been awhile, make sure you do a nanoid backup in your custom recovery and read and re-read the instructions for whichever rom you choose.

Mentioning the Palm Pre sure brought back happy memories, I really liked WebOS. Never understood why it didn't take off.

And though you probably know this, I'll say it anyway. No offense intended, but I've seen too many people brick their GS3s because they didn't understand this:

Not all GS3s are created equal. If you try to flash a ROM that's meant for something other than your specific version of the phone (Sprint, I assume), you will almost certainly brick your phone, turning it into a very expensive paper weight.

I understand the bricking concept, i wont use a rom unless im 110% sure its correct for my phone. And thanks for the link, im at work so i have plenty of time to browse :p

I loved my pre too. I was convinced it was indeed the "iphone killer" very stable platform but as far as physical strength goes, im glade i had set up the replacement plane... i went through 7 or 8 of those bad boys. Lol

And one more quick question. Is there an open source type app store available for rooted devices? That was one of the main reasons i rooted my pre...

It's not really open source, but there is the Amazon Appstore. They have their free app of the day, which is usually a paid app, but it's usually a few versions behind the Playstore and mostly games. Also, you can try Appbrain, it's been awhile since I've used it, so you might want to just explore it. There are a few others, but they are of questionable content, so I won't post them here.

What are you looking for when you say "open source"? Do you mean free? There are hundreds of thousands of free apps in the Google Play Store. If you truly mean open source, with source code available, I think you'll find many of those in the Play Store, too, but I don't know that there's any easy way to identify them. There are certain apps that require root access. You can probably find those be searching the Play Store for "root." XDA would be a good place to look, too. Lot's of developers can be found there.

If what you really mean is hacked versions of paid apps you can get for free, you'll have to figure that out on your own. We don't really support that here. Developers put a lot of effort into their work, and if they want to be compensated for it that's their right.

When i say open source i mean apps that are in a beta phase, before they become paid or free apps in the play store. My goal isnt to rip off developers hard work because i dont want to pay for it, thats not what im about. If i remeber correctly, once rooted on my palm pre, there were a couple seperate app stores of freshly developed apps, where you could dowbload it, use it and then report back with bugs, sugestions etc. Thats what open source meant to palm users a couple years back, and similar to the linux community today. Ill say ot one more time, i dont want to get paid apps for free... those developers put so much time, effort and often times theyre own money to producing the apps we all use, and im more the ablidged to pay for them lol

Your best bet for that is probably XDA, but also check the Developer forum here on A|C. I'm not aware of any formal app stores dedicated to beta apps. There are some apps labeled as beta in the play store. Try searching for the word beta and see what turns up.

Ill have to try that. And also explore what else i can do with a rooted device other than just changing the theme and what not. Thankss for all the info, i really appreciate it.

I rooted primarily for two reasons:

Titanium Backup. Until recently, there was no way to back up all your apps and app settings without being rooted and using a tool like TiBu. With the Pro Key, you can also freeze unwanted apps, and then delete them if you're sure you won't ever use them and freezing them didn't break anything.

There are some other apps that will do this, too, but TiBu was the first, and I've stuck with it.

Free WiFi tethering. I don't use it often, but on occasion I need to be able to get my laptop or my tablet online and have no WiFi available. If I used it all the time, I'd be willing to pay for their monthly plan, but I'm not going to pay for a full month of use for something I might use only once a month.

Other useful apps that need root include ad blockers, like AdAway; root editors like File Explorer and ES File Explorer; SetCPU; and more. Search in these forums and you'll probably find other recommendations.

Believe it or not, I didn't originally plan on rooting the GS3 at first. It seemed to be a solid feature packed phone on it's own merit. Then I ran into a problem, I hated the Home button turning on the phone. You have to root to disable it. The custom roms for this phone are fantastic and for some reason the XDA community for the GS3 seem to be totally different that the HTC EVO types. For the most part they have been very helpful and informative without biting off your head! I agree with Meyerweb, search the playstore for the keyword "root" and you'll find plenty of root only apps.

BTW, if you want the instructions for disabling the Home button it's here. And some custom roms have the option to disable it built in.

Haha im always afriad of being the "noob" when starting out on a forum so its good to know i shouldnt recieve much bashing. Im off today so i plan on fishing around xda and on here to find some cool things. Thats funny you mentioned the evo.. i had the evo 3g beforey galaxy and had plans of rooting all along but never got arouns to it. Mostly because i would updae the firm ware without seeing if any one had cracked it yet. Which leads me into another question. Will i have i trouble with ota updates now that im rooted? I had to remive all tweeks when updating on mt pre

Unlike the EVO, which once you installed a custom rom, you never received OTA updates, you WILL receive notification of an OTA. NEVER, repeat NEVER accept an OTA once rooted. In a best case scenario, it will just fail, but I've seen cases where some members say their phone is now messed up. What you should do, if still on stock rooted rom, is wait for one of the good folks here to post a topic with instructions on how to update *OR* if on a custom rom, check the XDA forum for your rom, they will post an updated rom with the update baked in.

Some apps have Beta right away in the description, or as a ribbon across the icon face. Example, there is a Chrome Beta, even says so on the front. I would also seriously avoid app stores except Amazon and Play. Most of the time, that is where your virus and worm problems come from.

No problem, sorry for the way my post sounded, but I figured if it saved even one person who runs across this thread six months from now from making that mistake...... well, you get the idea! ;)

ehh... you gotta throw out some tough love every now and again lol. i just wish i didnt have to use windows to do all this. im a primary linux user but im having some issues with odin or my laptop mounting my phone correctly, it keeps mounting as a music player/ mass storage device... really starting to tick me off lol. anyways im guna try my hand at installing a rom. i saw the screen shots of wicked sensations and like the way looks. so i guess thats a good place to start

, it keeps mounting as a music player/ mass storage device...

Yep, that's what Android does now. Began with ICS, I think. It's called MTP. Mass storage mode is gone. You can still use it to copy files back and forth between a computer and the phone, though.

Yep, Wicked is a good one, as is MOAR. Both offer so much customization you can make them look pretty much however you want.
