Had my nexus 7 for 4 days, some comments and concerns.

The new N7, which I was hoping to pick up, appears to have some serious issues. Unfortunately, Asus/google seem loathe to acknowledge them, which suggests minimal effort being made to fix them. I guess they're coasting on past sales and good reviews in the tech mags, and figure sales, not service, is what matters. Ho hum, guess I'll wait for the next ipad mini.

Not sure I understand. Other than a few that have touch sensitivity concerns, and one person with two stuck pixels, haven't heard of any glaring issues that would require a comment or hot fix.

Spasdic multi-touch, GPS won't lock over time, and random reboots are the big ones lots (but not all) are seeing.

It is always the case with these "variability in manufacturing" and/or "depends on usage" problems. Some will see them and feel everyone has the problem. Other will not see it and feel the people seeing it are a small minority. The truth is somewhere in between.

All 3 of the above issues have relatively large threads (compared to other issues) on the Google support forums and the rep there Paul has said Engineering is looking into them.

What's odd is that the glass surface on the faulty one was so amazingly slippery it was like uber polished! This one that works has a much less slippery screen...

Anyone else with really slick screen? I think that is what is giving me fits on long presses. I think my finger is gliding ever so slightly.

What's weird is I think I was also noticing the typical g issues on my I pad as well. Like, when I hit one letter, it'll register another note ad. Like when I press c, either c won't register or it'll be something like z.

So really, not sure if it's worth shipping back and seeing if a replacement would fix the issues.

Or hell, aybe I'm over exaggerating. I don't know.

The new one I got last weekend had None of the screen issues the one I picked up on release day did - I can type like a monster again now.

And that's one of the reasons I buy from local big box stores - really easy to return. No way would I do an amazon seller or even the Google store. Even if I had to pay a little more, the ease of exchange and warranty stuff is worth the premium...

I'm going to return the tablet. Honestly, there's just these niggling g issues that are making me not liking android as much anymore. I think I much rather like the experience of iOS devices more. So I'm also probably upgrading to a iPhone 5S when that hits. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I think I like the controlled, user interface first nature of iOS more than the customize and tinker android experience

The problem with the links not being recognized is a problem on the 2012 N7 as well. I've mentioned that there are times when I have to click on a link 3-4 times to get it to open and sometimes that doesn't work. Those times, I have to zoom in on the page to make the link larger then try to open it again and it usually works.
I've experienced this on my new Nexus 7 too, i thought it was an screen issue or possibly lag from chrome, I need to move it a bit or repress it a few time for that tiny link to open. Good to know the old nexus also has this problem so I shouldn't worry.

So now my nexus 7 keeps shutting itself off and some of my apps are crashing on start. WTF.

I was going to return it, but the company I got it from. Wants a 30 percent restock fee. Honestly, I think I'll just keep it.

30%, OUCH!

I had all the issues that you had and exchanged mine and this one has been great.
As far as the 30% restocking fee, I would argue that exchanging it for a defective unit should not warrant a restocking fee. If you were returning it for a refund, that would be one thing. If they won't back down, I would contact Amazon. If that doesn't work, I would let the company know you are reporting them to their local Better business Bureau> I would fight them with my last breath.

I don't even know if it's defective because I'm experiencing issues a lot of other people are and what seems like software issues.

Honestly, I'm thinking of just going back to IOS. I'm kinda getting annoyed with these little issues and micromanagements I'm doing with android.

If Asus hadn't have dropped the ball on this and the nexus 5 ends up being good, I would've been the first one to say Google hammered the guts out of Apple this year on mobile. As it stands now, I'm seriously thinking the extra $100 Apple premium is worth it. You don't get very many of these kinds of discussions there and when you do they take good care of you. Boring, but tempting. In just a month or 2 the next Mini is likely going to be on par with this tablet, just more expensive.

I started thinking maybe I'm doing something wrong because a lot of people like android a lot. But maybe there just more forgiving of the issues. I'm not sure.

No, there's a lot of great stuff on android but everyone has different tolerance levels. Speaking for myself there are things I've grown intolerant of:
Carrier controlled software
Flagships that lag
Poor QC from OEMs (something that's affected the PC industry for years)
Poor customer support
Having to play the mail in game for warranties
Dodgy customer support from companies located on the other side of the planet

You'll notice that Apple doesn't really fall under those categories. I've never bought apple because well, I'm a cheapskate. But also because there's always been more freedom with PC and android. Bit you know what? When I sent my daughter off to get a degree, and wanted to ensure she was equipped with the highest quality laptop money can buy, I bought her a macbook pro. The nexus line are the only products that meet my intolerance for OEMs and carriers. But once the nexus products start behaving like this, the bitten fruit becomes my next recourse.

I honestly think I don't mind paying a bit more for something that's going to be more stable or a better experience because I feel that extra money spent will be worth not having frustrations in the future. It's like the money I'm saving with buying a android over its I'm paying for in frustration, you know?

I find iOS somewhat limited but it's a little better than it used to be, and any way you cut it, a tablet is more or less just an app launcher and iOS apps have always been premium. I do believe the extra $100 is worth it for quality assurance and a highly effective customer support system.

What I like about IOS: simple yet responsive UI and great apps.

What I like about android OS: Multitask customization (like a mini portable pc) and Flash support (no longer the case now since it's unofficially).

Great, now chrome won't even boot up. Just crashes on startup. Seriously, what the hell is up with this thing?

The apps clearly win for me when it comes to iOS and my iPad. If there were more tablet optimized apps on the market, I would have no problem being Android only

Someone mentioned elsewhere that the average person has no idea that many of the apps that they are running on their Android tablets are just phone apps scaled up unless they have a chance to use an iPad and see the difference. I had no idea what I missing on the iPad side during he four months I used my Nexus 7 till I bought an iPad.

I don't know if the devs on the Android side will ever care enough to make their apps tablet optimized but till then, I appreciate and love my iPad mini more than ever right about now.
