I am looking into buying a tablet-- i am very interested in the Galaxy Note 8, which I think is coming out in a couple weeks.

I had something specific in mind though-- i want to try to use it primarily for
a) taking handwritten notes at work
b) handwriting my emails.

I know for a) the note has definitely shown its usefulness. But I am wondering if handwriting emails is really easier/useful/natural at all. Am I just fantasizing something that will end up not being practical at all? Or do people out there handwrite their emails as well on the Note and find it useful?

I'd love to hear some opinions!

You can use Samsung's writing-to-text input method with any app, so yes, it will work. I found it takes a bit of getting used to, and editing (e.g. adding punctuation after input) is a bit clunky.

If you want to send a handwritten note, I suppose you could send that as an embedded image, but I know I'd be really annoyed to have to respond to such a monstrosity.

As bobstro says, you can use the handwriting-to-text feature to input email text. I've done it frequently and it is often faster for me than typing. Recognition is pretty good, but I often have to make a correction or two in the body of the message.

I can use handwriting in the to and subject input fields but not too wow in the body of the email. Is that standard or is something wrong?

Wherever you can type you can handwrite - using the handwriting screen that will fill the bottom of the display. To put handwriting in a specific spot - like moving from the subject field to the body of the email, just touch the screen in the body with the pen and then go to the handwriting screen and write.

Handwriting - as stated above - takes a little getting used to. It does recognize about 97% of what you write in script or print. If there is an error it is easy to correct and it is important to proofread what you have written to make sure it did not pick up an unwanted letter or character which can happen. If you write in the center of the writing window it does better than if you try to write across the entire window and then move down a line- but it will work that way too. It understood my chicken scratch on my first try. Problem is I am more used to typing now than writing and just the effort of writing can be more of a chore than typing something out. But it works very well!

Direct pen input is enabled and there is no pen button on keyboard. So far it works fine everywhere but in Samsung default email app's message body.
Click and hold the button on the lowest row, 2nd from left. It sometimes shows the pen button, sometimes microphone. When you hold it, all other buttons are shown.
