Hangouts and sms

I read a few articles about this and how it will work....Will Hangouts use my cell phone # to send and receive tests meaning I won't have to pay my carrier for a texting plan? I use GV at the moment for all texting, but that's obviously using a different #

I don't think so, it is just instant messaging, done through your Google account not cell number. I know that people can look you up on G+ by cell number now if you allow it

My guess is when it comes, it will do two things. First, if you have a Google Voice number, it will integrate all messaging for that number - receiving and sending texts, and perhaps even MMS (we will see about that). If you do not have a Google Voice number, however, Hangouts will probably act as an app on your phone that also receives and replies to your text messages instead of having to use a separate messaging app, but it will do nothing more.
