Hangouts + bluetooth question

So I have a feeling that I already know the answer to this, but I want to ask the question anyway.

I use my 6P with my car's bluetooth system. I also use Hangouts for my text messages. However, my car will not notify me of new messages with Hangouts set as my SMS app. With Messages set at my SMS app, I get a notification on my car's touchscreen that I have a new text, and I have the option to have my car read the message (text-to-speech) or I can read it myself if I'm parked. But with Hangouts, I don't get the notification.

I'm fairly certain that this is because of the way Hangouts works. It doesn't treat SMS messages as SMS messages but rather as Hangouts "conversations" and so the car never recognizes them as text messages.

Is there any way to have my car alert me to incoming Hangouts messages? I figure there probably isn't, but I wanted to ask. It's not a huge deal and the upside of using Hangouts is greater than the downside of not getting alerts on my car (the notifications still come through to the phone, of course), but I thought I'd ask.

I think you are correct. I use a text alert app and it also does not recognize texts when they come in through hangouts. Very annoying.

Hangouts messages come thru as data I believe so are not recognized as SMS. Hangouts SMS messages on the other hand SHOULD be recognized but my experience is that they are only intermittently recognized. I'm actually trying to troubleshoot that now.

I'm curious what kind of car you have, and if you're talking about using SMS messages through hangouts or hangouts messages.

My own car is too old for such technology, but my girlfriends (Honda) has that feature. She uses hangouts for both SMS and hangouts threads, and the car does identify SMS messages sent to her (even with hangouts set as the SMS client) and pulls them up in car. However, hangouts messages do not show up (since they are not SMS messages.)
