Hangouts update? Has anyone gotten it?

Yep. I like the new design. I don't mind not being able to swipe to archive a message. Voice quality was really good. I like being able to call from my N7.

The only thing still is integration of SMS from my carrier number between devices. It's great to be able to do so using Voice, but I don't give out that number. So for the time being I can stick to FB messages or start giving out my GV number.

They need to add the message type back in when sending. It doesn't show up unless you manually merge a SMS with a Hangout.

Also still waiting on a way to have Hangouts search my contacts and determine which ones are also using Hangouts for their messaging client in order to use IM instead of SMS.

Small quips aside, it's a good update.

There is a setting to send SMS from the phone carrier number rather than the GV number. But I guess other devices logged into your gmail would still need to use the GV number. Still, once I'm weaned off Google Voice, this replaces that and the native messaging app. I'm starting to believe this might be a good idea.

I got it yesterday and I love it, I am not so crazy about the GV integration.

Just got another update for google voice and still not option to choose to send SMS via carrier or google voice.

The SMS part didn't pop up right away for me.

I got the sms pop-up the other day. It's integrated but no option to choose sms method. I'll keep waiting patiently.

Forgive me if I missed it, but do you have sms turned on in the settings=>sms

If so, you should able to go into settings=>sms=> send sms from Should be the 4th option down. If sms is turned off, the other options don't appear.

Thanks. I went into that menu and I had three options as to how to send text. Via last used, mobile carrier, or Google voice.

For some reason, I was thinking I would have on the fly options while sending an sms.

I agree, while the auto select default is good, we still should be able to change it on-the-fly. I guess the super-geniuses at google disagree.

Has anyone out there had problems trying to use voice commands through Google Now to send text messages through the new hangouts with your google voice number? I say the send text to and everything seems to work fine and it even says sending but then search locks up for a while and quits and the message never gets to hangouts.

I tried cleared caches, uninsulated the Google Voice app, and several restarts throughout. I did reinstall the Google Voice app because the call quality with the hangouts dialer was pretty poor and having google voice installed you can still select to use the voice number, carrier number, or ask every time.

On the fly is what I'd prefer.

Looks good visually but I'm not a fan of Google removing the swipe option to bounce out of a hangout. To me this wasn't a smart choice. However I do like the fact I don't accidentally swipe and archive hangouts.

I'm not seeing a way to do group SMS messaging, only hangouts via email address, if it's saved in the contacts.

Seriously? Why would they take away this feature? I'll be uninstalling and switching to a 3rd party app if we can't do a group message now.

If you go into SMS settings and change it to send from mobile number instead of google voice number you can do a group message.

I dont know what to think... The app is really glitchy... It seems like its confused alot about what to do. Whoever is in charge of Android Hangouts app development needs to be fired. Because IOS team is way better at making a better product. Messages seem to disappear, theres no way to start a convo with your Gvoice number unless you start it from the old app or the web. Clicking a new contact to text, kicks you out the message thread. Lots of animation glitches. Im not complaining but it just seems really really really beta, alpha maybe. I dont understand why it just cant be consistent. Make all incoming messages one color and the outgoing is another color. Instead Hangouts havs different colors but the SMS is the same color no matter who sends. No unread message counter. I keep having to reenable the sms app to actually mark messages as read. Because they are read in the Hangouts app but it doesnt unbold the message when read.

Agreed. I've long since said the only thing I miss about my iPhone is the message app. Them again the beauty of android is the ability to customize.

It's not glitchy at all for me.
None of my messages has disappeard.
You can start a convo with your GV number in hangouts
I think you may need to reboot your phone, I'm not seeing any of these glitches.

The iPhones message app may function better right now, but it isn't the same thing. iMessage doesn't compare to the functionality of Hangouts. Not even close,
