Hangouts vs messenger .

I have always used stock Google messenger since February when I got my Nexus 6. I like it but would be nice to have one app all in one and like the fact that hangouts has a dialer within the app. Only problem is I can't make it my default dialer. Whenever I get a incoming call its the stock dialer ?

You cannot make Hangouts the default dialer. If someone calls your carrier number, it will go to the default dialer. If you use a Google Voice number, you can set Hangouts to accept incoming calls (you have to turn off call forarding to your cell number so only Hangouts rings).
