Tried to switch out of hangout s in settings but it wouldn't let me.
Seems 1984 is here.

Settings)wireless and networks) more seems to offer an option to switch out of hangouts presumably to whatever did SMS before hangouts appeared as hangouts was playing up but it is a blind alley.

Well, if you have no other SMS app installed, then there's nothing else it can do. Install a different SMS app (Messenger, Textra, whatever) and it should allow you to switch to using the new app as your default SMS texting app.

What other SMS apps do people use? I recently downloaded textra, mainly for the quick reply feature.
Any better ones out there?

Textra for sms/mms, and AquaMail for email. So much for the "pure android" experience.:-\
