has anyone backed up a custom rom using custom recovery

And successfully restore them?
I had done a stock backup, reborn rom, & a cm7 backup but when i tried to restore them the only one that worked was the stock backup.

I did one for kraven cm7 and it would not restore either. I think it's beacuse it's a iho rom and not froyo rom for some reason.

Always works for me. Rom-to-Rom, switching between CM7 and other Rom's etc...

What custom recovery are you using? Most here use zefie's xionia.

No issues here, xionia recovery. If u rename the backup, don't use any spaces

Another important thing to note when restoring a nandroid backup is you MUST have your device charged at least 30-50%. Otherwise you will get strange errors about nandroid-mobile.sh and whatnot.
