Has anyone done a DIY Daydream kit?

Inspired by James Bricknell's article, I made my own Daydream kit for $50 cheaper than Google's headset, has anyone done something like this with your VR headset? If so, post below on your setup: what kind of controller, what kind of headset, what works/doesn't works, etc.

I would like to, but I'm in the process of moving first. Sounds like a fun project.
