Well, I'm running 1.5 R2 on my S4 and it's solid. Haven't had a problem yet.

I've been reading a mixed of instruction steps.
Is there ONE straight forward instruction on how to: 1) root the phone; 2) how to flash with CleanROM?

The installation instruction from Scott seems to be very high level:
Must have custom recovery installed. I recommend the latest version of CWM! <<< how do I do this?

I can figure the rest of the steps below.
Copy ROM to storage
Reboot to Recovery
Must wipe data and factory reset in Recovery. Failure to do so waves your "right" to support.
Restoring any data from any back up also waves all your right to support. Please don't bother posting in the thread!
Flash ROM
Reboot to System
Profit!

I got it.

This is as simple as 1, 2, 3

1) watch and follow this video
How To Root Samsung Galaxy S4 Quick & Fast! Step by Step! - YouTube

2) Go to app store, download and install CWM

Note: make sure you downloaded the correct ROM for your phone and saved it on your SD Card

3) in CWM, Select reboot into recovery; after phone is in recovery mode > wipe/reset cache and install the ROM, reboot.

Done!

Just wanted to share this great find.
After I loaded CleanROM 1.0, wifi didn't work. I tried flashing it 3 times, no luck. I gave up and came across this thread. [ROM][ATT&CAN][ROOTED] Google Edition 4.2.2 - v1.3 - Page 65 - xda-developers

I finally loaded Google Edition on my S4 and WOW! silky smooth and fast.

You basically need to download these 3 files (assumed your phone is rooted)
1) Google Edition v1.3 ROM 4.2.2 DEODEXED
2) ExtendedPowerMenu
3) loki-doki (you might not need this, I did it anyway just in case)
