Has anyone tried the tablet encryption?

I'm curious to see if anyone has encrypted their Samsung with the built-in data encryption? Did you notice any performance slowdown or battery life issues?

Anytime you encrypt data there will be a ding in performance on any device. It may or not be noticeable but the larger the file that is encrypted, the longer it will take to open since the system has to decrypt it before it can open it. Most users will place all sensitive files into one folder and just encrypt that folder rather than encrypt the entire device.

I have my entire laptop encryped with True-crypt and have not noticed any slowdown. It's always nice to know if it is stolen, the data is useless to anyone but me. I am curious about the tablet's encryption. I would also like the same for my phone which is much more likely to be lost or stolen than either my tablet or laptop. Whispercore is working on phone encryption software. I can't wait to give it a try.

I was just going to post new thread about it. I did encrypt mine and definitely noticed a slowdown in performance. some applications like market have to be opened more than once before they load...

Not sure if i want to go back and reformat everything form scratch and remove encryption...

Typing a password every time the screen is off is a pain, but i found a work around it.

Not really accurate. The drive is generally encrypted at the sector level. When each sector is read from disc, it passes through the decryption algorithm and the usebale sector data is revealed. Since each sector is read on an as-needed basis, the total size of the drive is not really a relevant factor. The master file table is decrypted, which is why you can see what files are on the disc. When you try to access them, the file content is decrypted in it's sector.

That is for hard drives, anyway. I admit I don't know if there are differences in SDD (sectors? MFT?). I too use Truecrypt on my laptop (and have used of on many less powerful computers of mine in the past) and performance loss is not noticeable. I'm just saying the performance is not necessarily going to be noticeably lessened. If it is, they probably did something wrong.

I was looking to encrypt mine as well. Hopefully some others with their galaxy tab encrypted can chime in on how well it works and performs.
