has 'GPS' been replaced with 'LOCATION'

Hi.. I used to see GPS on the pull-down settings on my S4. Now I see the word 'Location' instead.

Has it just been re-named or has Google managed to infiltrate my phone. It seems to be a term used in the Google apps, that's why I ask.

Thanks - Carol

Re: has 'GPS' been replaced with 'LOCATION'

My pull down still says GPS. But, when I long press, it shows "Location"

Location is a more general term, and GPS is one possible component of that. The others are wi-fi and mobile data, which are less accurate, but use less battery.

So GPS is still there, and it is included in the category of location as I believe it always has been.

I don't know the Android APIs, but as I understand it, applications don't generally use a GPS interface, they use location APIs. Apps that require the accuracy (driving directions etc) may require the phone to have GPS turned on, and not the less accurate methods, but other apps have the option to use location services if the extreme accuracy is not required for their purposes..

Yes it looks like the "GPS" button in the notification panel has been replaced with "location".

Every time you turn it on there is a location consent you must agree to. If you leave it on the battery drains because GPS is on. If you select the "power saving mode" then GPS isn't running however you must go back and change the mode to use the GPS. Used to be 2 different settings. 1 notification panel button to turn on GPS and a location setting to use wifi or network for location settings.

Any idea why? How do I get a GPS button back? And why must I consent every time to location? Why does it take multiple screens to do what used to be possible with a quick button?

Thanks
