Have OV, Considering Motorola Triumph: GPS, other issues?

I am a current LG Optimus V user. It's "rock solid" as they say, although this is my 2nd copy & the auto-rotate stopped, my 1st copy, the GPS quit. But overall, I'd still state it as a "rock solid" device.

I'm pondering a jump to the Motorola Triumph. In reading around, it seems some of them have issues with flickering display and horrible GPS amongst other things. The latter especially concerns me, as I used to use a Samsung Captivate on AT&T and it couldn't lock-on to save its life. This 2nd copy of my OV locks on in SECONDS (the 1st one did as well, until it started acting up), even with the GPS functionality off unless I'm running the Maps app. I turn it on, run the maps app, hit "my location"--not 5 seconds later, even in the boonies, I'm locked on.

Can I obtain that level of performance on a Triumph without having to practically make the thing myself? The Captivate I had, there were many suggestions on how to make it work okay, but nothing I tried ever worked. I gave up on it.

I have done some research, according to this posting (tinyurl.com/6lqwsf2) if GPS is being flaky it's a matter of rooting the device & installing an XDA developers fix. Has this been established as necessary for pretty much ALL MT's, or just a few? Is there a way by checking a serial number or software version to see if a particular sample is apt to be affected?

What's the overall consensus regarding this?

The fix did work on mine and after flashing a custom rom it works great. I have the V as well and while the phone itself its more responsive and faster for casual web and stuff, the moto triumph has a bigger screen and more rom and ram memory, faster CPU. So each has its own thing. Gps is good not as good as the v but it is usable.

I'm pretty sure the optimus V has the same ammount of RAM. I also come from the Optimus with a custom rom, I loved the rom but needed/wanted a bigger screen. The CPU can be overclocked to 1.9ghz but even at the default clock speed it still flys, at least with a custom ROM installed. I didn't use mine more then 10 minutes before installing a ROM but after I did I fell in love. The only problem is sometimes the touchscreen doesn't register my touch. This doesn't happen often and never happens when typing. Other then that way better then the OV.

Got mine from amazon, about 3 months ago just the stock phone not rooted or any thing. all functions work fine.:)

I'm also thinking about it, I need a phone to mess around with(one to learn more about android on). I had a V which I wrecked trying to flash different recovery after soft bricking the thing. Are there any issues with the colors of the screen or colors not displaying properly? I have read some review other places but I haven't heard too much about it. I know it has a 5mp camera, that any good?

The camera is definitely better than the V. The color, I would say, is a little bit "off". Not enough to bother me, but I definitely noticed it when switching from the V.

The GPS on the Triumph was pretty much useless when I bought it. Rooted and flashed CM7 and it works just as well as the V did now. I couldn't be happier with the Triumph. It is fast, has a large screen and a better camera than I've had on a phone before. Only problem is the HDMI port doesn't work with Gingerbread. I'm not sure I would ever use it anyway though.

Mine worked fine before root, no issues other than occasionally the back button not wanting to work and the GPS being super slow. Now that i've installed CM7.2, I still have the back button issue(leading me to assume it's a phone issue but with all the issues others are having, I'd say home screen and a going back into the app to use the back button again- I'll deal(it normally works after I hit the home "button"). But now GPS is super duper fast! I've also had a few issues with the LED flashing when I had no messages or alerts of any kind on the stock ROM.

Also, out of VM's new android, it's got a faster processor and the biggest memory. They keep releasing lower end androids- and I'm glad I didn't try to stick it out and keep using my intercept. :)

If I were you, I WOULD get phone insurance, keep your old V as a backup(in case you got a dud and had to return it, or just broke your android). You could always wait until they release a better android, but it looks like at the moment that this is the best we're gonna get. Of course, I also recommend waiting till a sale. :)

I would NOT get used(unless from a friend or family member for cheap) because of the whole phone insurance thing. You don't know the phone's history, how man times it's been dropped and how the last person used it and whatnot, leading you to potentially blame the phone and not the prior user whom could've mucked things up(or if you get a crummy triumph).
