Have to press the back button to use phone

I have just started having an issue where I must press the back button to use my phone. When I wake it up by unlocking it "appears" to be my main screen. However it apparently is some sort of stand by screen or screensaver. I see all of my icons exactly like my regular screen. They are however not active. I then press the back button and it looks the same except my message bar appears at the top and my icons are now active. Any ideas???

I'm not savvy enough to know about Safe Mode.

Which phone? I can tell you how to get into Safe Mode if I know which phone (although all I'll do is Google "[your phone] Safe Mode" and share the link ).

Safe Mode temporarily disables all apps you installed, so it can narrow down the problem to something you installed vs something on the system.
