Found this over at XDA; no root required or anything like that.
I used to use Xposed to do this with my Nexus 5 while in the car. But I guess now there's a simple app for it. I didn't look into how it works or if it's staying on and draining battery or anything. I've only had the app installed for an evening + about an hour this morning, so results may vary (and let us know in this thread please). So far I haven't noticed any negative effect.

I have it set to Google Play Music and to have the volume up skip to the next track (when the screen is off) if I double tap the button.
There is another app that allows you to change the vol up and vol down keys to any shortcut or app you want to open upon double tap, but I haven't tried that one out yet as I haven't come up with a good personal use just yet.
