Having a Problem with Sending Texts

So my boyfriend also has a Samsung Galaxy S3 and has been complaining that my texts are arriving much later (usually 15 - 30 minutes) after they send. When they do arrive they arrive all at once. I was wondering if this was a problem with my phone or his. Also, what can I do to fix it? Another problem I've been facing is sometimes when I call someone it'll sound extremely robotic and choppy, even when I'm just in my room. Any help in these matters would be super appreciated!!! Are you both on the same carrier?
Are you both using the same Messaging app?
If you're sending SMS (no attachments, < 160 characters), that totally relies on your cellular signal - what kind of signal do both of you have (3 bars or more, hopefully)?
What happens when each of you text someone else - does that go through normally?

Depending on the carrier, you could try updating your roaming capabilities. On Verizon I believe you dial *228 and select option 2.
