Having a small WiFi issue:

So when I walk into a store and they have WiFi but it requires a password (for example) my phone will not automatically just use my regular wireless/4g connection but rather sit there and wait for me to connect it to WiFi.
Is there a setting that will automatically connect to WiFi ONLY if it is available (and public) and if not, revert to wireless?

The problem is that many public wifi hotspots appear free, but when you get the browser, you then have to enter a password for the network (as opposed to entering a password for the router's security). I don't think any setting would be able to tell if the first kind of hotspots require a password once the browser opens. You could just place a wifi toggle on/of on your homescreen to easily turn wifi off.

I didnt even think about that-it cant differentiate between hotspots that require passwords and hotspots that dont.
How do I put a wifi toggle on my homescreen?

Your phone probably already has a widget with a toggle--look for one called Power Controls. There are also a TON of them on Google Play--just search for "wifi toggle."

I recommend Power Toggles, which is an extremely versatile app, allowing you to place toggles on the homescreen or in the notification shade. And it's free!

The problem is that the store's wifi shares a name with one you've stored in your phone. Just open up wifi and "forget" that network, and your phone will resume using wireless data. People who leave their router with the stock name "Linksys" or whatever are jerks.

If you are up to date (4.2.2) then the WiFi toggle is built in. Just pull down the notification bar and hit the quick settings button in the very top right corner. From there you can toggle WiFi on and off with a single tap.

There is a difference between public WiFi hotspots and private networks, my own WiFi at home still has its default ssid because it is anonymous, anyone within range (such as the neighbours) can see it, but they cannot associate it with me and they certainly cannot access it. Guess that makes me a jerk.

Is there any way to set the WiFi to just turn on when it finds my home network?
I am finding this whole thing incredibly annoying as I dont understand why its doesnt default to wireless, when it cant find a wifi network.
My Ipad simply reverts to wireless when it cant automatically connect to another wifi netwrok.

With my HTC, EVERYWHERE i go in NYC has some sort of network that I cannot log into (including cabs!) so I basically have to shut off wifi every morning when I leave my place and then turn it back on every time I come home.
Toggle button or not, this is ridiculous.

The problem with the former is that if you want the wifi radio to turn on when it detects your home network, that means the wifi radio actually has to be on at some point in order to search for a signal.

If you purchase and install Tasker, you could program it to turn on and connect to your wifi only at home: Turn On WiFi at Home - Tasker Wiki

I think you can turn off notifications for when a network is available. If you do this, the phone won't try connect to open networks. My One never has tried to connect with that off.

I just want it to switch from Wireless to Wifi, when it detects a network that it can automatically connect.
As opposed to doing whats it doing now, which is detecting a Wifi network that it cannot connect to and then just sitting there waiting for me to go and shut it off, so that it can then utilize my wireless.

Did you go to Wi-Fi > Three-dot-menu > Advanced? The option for turning off network notifications is the first one at the top. I'm still not sure if that could help you but try turning it off.

I just checked and mine is already off.

There is also an option to block open networks but I think it would be a PITA to block each and every open network you come across.
