Having file viewing problems with s8 connected to pc

[Android Central Question]

As the title says the phone connects to the pc and it shows the USB connectivity settings and the phone and SD card on the pc. But no photos are viewable. Some folders contain the photo files but they cannot be open. It says "we can't open this file". The same happened to music folder. At first it was empty. Second try there was files. The usb cable worked just fine on another phone but not the s8. DCIM folder and the folders in it are all empty. But I can view all my photos in my phone gallery. I really need to back up these photos

Welcome to Android Central! When you swipe down the notification panel and tap the USB notification, is it set to MTP/File Transfer? Are the files saved to Internal Storage or to an SD card?

Do you have photos on the SD card ? And if you take the SD card out can the computer see DCIM file and other folders?
