Hi, I went through my usual setup of google voice on my new HTC 10 (unlocked) and it give an error setting up. I tried the codes you type in ("activate voice mail on this phone" in GV setup) and that gave an error as well. When I go to voicemail on the 10 via the phone app\settings it gives me the choice of selecting My Carrier or Google Voice but selecting GV doesn't work/stick, it always goes back to My carrier. However, when I check the Voice Mail carrier setting, it shows my google voice number and not my carrier/sim number (which is good!).

I can't find the "forwarding" number section that usually exists in Android phone settings, there's just the voicemail setting (i.e. where to forward if no answer, have to change it from the carrier VM number to GV number). I think if I can set the forwarding number set everything will be working, regardless if the VM setting still says "carrier vm".

Anyone else using Google Voice with the 10?
Thanks,
JT

If you already have setup GV on this line, skip the part of VM setup. It is not needed as the setting is on the network back-end, not on particular phone.

I'm having the same issue. I haven't contacted at&t yet but I have a feeling it has something to do with provisioning changes automatically made to my line after swapping my sim to the 10. If I move the sim back to my nexus 6 I still get the same errors.

Thanks, so what you're saying is the GV app on the phone is really just to setup the voicemail & forwarding settings on the phone, correct? I don't want the AT&T VM to pick up the calls becuase I never check it, I only look for VMs in Hangouts.

I normally don't bother myself but in my case and probably jeffreytz's case our line was automatically re-provisioned when we swapped to the 10. The re-provisioning changed the VM number back to at&t's and I can't change it back to my GV number myself. I can't make any forwarding changes anymore on my line. Goes for both My nexus 6 and htc 10.

Yes the app would make those changes on your behalf when you went through the setup process.

OK so my HTC 10 just got an update pushed to it and now it has a "Calls" section in Settings that wasn't there before, and it contains a GSM Call Settings inside which there is a Call Forwarding section. When I clicked on it it did a little update/refresh and now shows my google voice number for Forward when Busy, Forward when Unanswered, and Forward when unreachable. All is good :)

Told you. Everytime I change to a new phone this will happen. So, now I just skip the VM setup all the time.
Also, if AT&T send you a voice mail (from they support CSR), it will go straight into your AT&T voice mail box, not the forwarding GV. Better have the AT&T VM phone number handy if you want to check those voice mails. Happened to me once :)

Now I actually no longer use GV VM because I found AT&T's own Visual Voice Mail works just as well. No need to jump through hoops.

Thanks, I use GV VM because I have a two different phone lines and I want the VMs consolidated in a single place.

I just got a new Galaxy S7 (AT&T) and am having the same issues - calls go to AT&T voicemail instead of GV. I've tried changing the call forwarding settings as Jeffrey suggests, i.e. changing the phone number under “call forwarding” (forward when busy, forward when unanswered, forward when unreachable) from the AT&T voicemail number to my Google voice number, but when I do the phone tries to update and then gives the error message “Failed to read data. Unexpected response from network.”

I've also tried switching "service provider" under Settings/Applications/Phone/Call Settings/Voicemail to “Google Voice” (instead of “My Carrier”), but the phone shows “Reading Settings”, “Updating Settings” and then the error message “Failed to Read Data. Forwarding Number Change Failed.”

Any other ideas/suggestions?
