Having issues with phone / apps lagging excessively with the latest update. Suggestions?

My phone updated it's software on 2/16/2015 and afterwards my phone and apps are all lagging. As much as 30 seconds at times. When charging the battery is heating up as well. Funny, it was working fine before the update. This really sucks because I just bought the phone to replace another one that had started performing poorly. Any suggestions other than leaving Verizon (which is already on my mind). Who needs these headaches?

First clear the system cache. (Settings in Storage.)

If that doesn't do it, bring it to Verizon. It's possible that there was a glitch in the update.
