HD calls?

Once in a while I'll actually talk on my phone (these things do that ya know)...and I'll notice exceptional sound quality...like the quality of a Skype call or something...not of a typical phone call. I'll look at my phone and notice it says "HD".

How does this happen? What are the prerequisites? Anyone know what the deal is with that?

Thanks

Being on a tower face that has VoLTE. It's like the prerequisites of getting 4G a couple of years ago. most carriers are slowly upgrading to VoLTE (some of them still in the "when do we start planning this stuff" stage, some in the "that's 25% of our towers converted" stage) - so the main "prerequisite" is patience. Eventually we'll remember the days of 2G voice like we remember AMPS (analog cellphones) - as something that used to be done a long time ago.

Whether VoLTE will be a much a "disimprovement" as switching to digital was or not waits to be seen.

An AT&T rep told me that the HD Voice will only activate when you are talking to other phones that have the HD Voice capability.

I just had an HD can today and the difference in clarity and volume was significant.

Note in my house!

I don't know if it works in quite the same way in the US as it does in the UK, but as it stood a couple of months ago, both phones need to support HD Voice, and both be on the same network.

The networks here are still trying to get it to work between each other properly, but when it works, its amazing how good it sounds!
