My MID mini-tablet (Android OS 4.0.3) has a mini-HDMI port. I have the mini-HDMI to female HDMI adapter and HDMI cable. Can I output music from the supplied music app to an audio system using HDMI? (Using the headphone jack is not practical due to the low volume output by the device.)

Do you have an input to an audio system that you can test this with?

If not, you can consider getting an app that boosts the audio to your device.

Also, I have used my headphone jack to output audio to TVs, cars, etc. and never found the volume to be too low.

You can output HDMI to a device that accepts HDMI input. Audio systems don't have HDMI inputs, since HDMI is a) multimedia and b) digital. You could probably route the HDMI signal to a TV or monitor, then route its audio output to your audio system. Or use something like AV Toolbox AP-536 HDMI Audio Extractor to extract and process the audio.

I tried HDMI connection to an HDTV and also (separately) to a DVD player/theatre system and got nothing, then earphone jack to TV AV input and got very low volume (I assume not enough power for the TV. But based on your advice, I tried the earphone jack to a desktop speaker system (with in-built amplifier) and it works fine. I'll abandon the HDMI idea. Thanks all for your help.

That's really odd. I've used the HDMI many times to watch video through a TV and had no problems. Regardless, glad to hear you have a solution. :D
