HDMI Question

One of the reasons I am getting this phone is the large screen and ability to stream NFL games to it that may not be on TV (no I don't have one of those fancy cable packages to get any game I like). My question is will I be able to use my HDMI out jack while streaming a game to pop it up on my 42'' Vizio?? I'm assuming I will be able to but I'm sort of curious as to how it will look.

no.

as i understand it, the only thing you can play via HDMI to an external monitor is video shot with the phone...no copy-protected streaming content or movie downloads.

You may assume incorrectly. The Blockbuster app (in it's current form) does not output to HDMI on the DroidX. Obviously this is hard to believe, that you would pay $4 to rent a poor quality copy of a movie and NOT be able to even view it on your bigscreen, but that's how it stands right now apparently. I don't have much hope for the NFL app...

It still escapes me why Motorola would partner with Blockbuster, a company that doesn't hide the fact that it's on its last legs.

Let's hope VZW/Moto gets with the program, and we see a Netflix App down the road.

I'm uninstalling that app as soon as I get the phone lol.

Good news: Netflix is currently working on an Android app. They've had a job listing for an Android developer to build an app!

Well that sucks.

I hope they will change that.

Its not motorola, android, or verizons fault. Its the Movie(TV) Industry. I work for a hotel chain, and our Satellite feeds, we have to use ProIdium encryption at our head-ends, then the TV's decrypt it! They don't want any theft between our equipment room, and the guest rooms. Kinda Goofy I know!

I have the NFL Sunday ticket app for Directv. I paid for it. Why wouldn't I be allowed to view it via HDMI?

It would have to do with only being able to stream HDMI content that is already on your phone. I don't know how streamed app content will work. It's something that won't be figured out in more detail until the phone actually launches and people can try this stuff out I think.

It won't last. ;)

yeah, based on the MotoDev podcast, the hdmi drivers are only enabled from within the Gallery app. I'm sure someone will eventually find a way around that though.

I really hope this isn't due to RIAA/Movie Industry lawyer BS, and hope it is just something that hasn't been developed yet and will be possible in the future.... However, it wouldn't surprise me if it was due to legal issues, despite the fact that I have that exact same functionality in my home Bluray player with an internet connection and the built-in Netflix app.

This is a feature that I had sort of counted on and assumed would be there (after watching TV-Out demo for the Incredible where they were showing 'Finding Nemo'). I just assumed that when Netfilx made its announcement regarding Android, it would be for this purpose, which I think all would agree would be absolutely awesome. Especially when taking young kids on vacation.

I'm not trying to download the movies permanently, and I'm not attempting to burn them to DVD, put in some sort of encryption on the stream so that when it is buffered locally it is unusable to anything but the Netflix/Blockbuster app. I know that method can still be compromised, but what could possibly be the issue that isn't already an issue with every home computer and HTPC being used to stream movies right now?

Sorry, venting.

wow i thought it would of played video content over hdmi just cause the competition's does.(DI) But i'm glad i now know this.

Hmm, according to this:

Motorola Droid X: Hands-On | Android Phone Fans

The Blockbuster app WILL output over HDMI.

According the your link Blockbuster will not output over HDMI

YouTube - Motorola Droid X: Hands-On (Part 2)

Watch that video again at the 4:40 mark. The guy explains Blockbuster has a contract that prevents it from outputting over HDMI. He did say VCast will output over hdmi though however.

I'm wondering if certain apps are able to output over HDMI then developers may have access to HDMI out. If that were the case I foresee developers creating apps that playback via HMDI.

Baaah. Now I feel like an idiot. It seemed like in the first video (the one I actually watched), like he mentioned Blockbuster over HDMI, but it did seem like he was a little too casual about it.

I hope Netflix isn't bound by the same contract.
