Is there a way to keep HDR+ on all the time instead of switching it on every time I launch the camera? Its set to HDR+ Auto by default and I don't know how the software knows to turn it on?

My Pixel running Android 8.1 starts the Google Camera app with HDR+ on.

I wish I could say the same. I always shoot with HDR+ on, and the delay of having to change the settings every time I open the camera app is quite annoying; not to mention potentially missing a great shot as a result.

My Pixel XL always starts with HDR+ on Auto. If I switch it OFF, then close the camera (and swipe it away), it reopens in AUTO. If I turn it ON and do the same steps, it starts in AUTO mode again.

Just to confirm - are we talking about the Pixel, the Pixel XL, the Pixel 2 or the Pixel XL 2? There are settings on the Pixel 2s that are not there on the original generation Pixels.

I have the Pixel XL. It always defaults to "HDR+ AUTO." I'd like to be able to set the default to "HDR+ ON."

I checked again. Yes, my Google Camera App, version 5.1.018.177470874, on my original Pixel running Anrdoid 8.1.0 is opening with HDR+.

I have the same exact camera version - 5.1.018.177470874. Can you share a screen shot of your camera as soon as you open it? Here's mine (I have it face down on my desk at the moment). You'll see the "A" above the HDR+ at the top. This means "auto", not "on".Screenshot_20180105-133813.jpg

That's the same version I have and the same thing I see when starting up the camera, can3gxw.
