Headphone / vol oddity?

So still playing with my new idol 3. I didn't get jbl headphones like I guess sine did., but I have some Samsung & others. Of course they work fine, but the volume control doesn't work right.
In proper upright position, vol up on the headphone line increases the vol, but vol down does nothing. Even tried a different pair of headphones, same thing.

Is this normal, is mine broken?

Now the oddity, flip the phone, and now vol up turns the sound down! But so does the side buttons, so when flipped, so is the vol buttons.

Both buttons should work regardless of which side you're holding it. If that's not happening then I would get a replacement.

Well I tried all 3 of my new idols, all 3 do the same thing. Works perfectly fine on my s3... Weird. They are Samsung brand, but that shouldn't make a difference should it.
