Headphones/Mike symbol problem.

When I insert my headphones, the notificationbar does not show the headphones symbol. When I pull headphones, notification bar shows the headphones symbol.If I have to hear the phone call voice, I have to inject the headphones and listen from the phone hearing speaker. Is it a software problem or hardware problem? Please advise.
