headset jack problems

we have fires in our backyard every friday and i have been hooking my droid up to my little speaker system via aux input, no problems using slacker or the built in music interface.

The droid incredible, however, is giving me problems.

Slacker and the music interface play just fine without the headset plugged in, as soon as i plug in the cord for the aux input, it skips songs, gives me error codes on slacker, and pretty much freezes up my phone.

It does this to both mine and my buddies incredibles, but my brother in laws iphone works just fine...

I tried a hard reset, installed only slacker radio, still have the same problems.

any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my Toyota's auxiliary input. I think there's something that makes the phone think a headset is plugged in - it started launching the voice dialer, skipping all over the place, etc. I think part of it might be that I have a splitter connected to the aux input (I have a harman/kardon iPod kit that uses aux input, and I don't want to have to swap cables if I decide to use the 160GB iPod instead of Slacker on the Android), but I haven't done too much testing yet.

Oddly enough, the phone doesn't do that when I use the aux input on my wife's Subaru.

i forgot about the voice dialer thing too, keeps popping up and sends the phone into a frenzy, maybe its a bad cable? ill have to look around here for a different one

I spoke a little too soon - same thing happened in my wife's Subaru. The only difference I can think of is the phone was charging while it did this (and since I was down to 5%, I had no choice but to keep it charging).

Is anyone else having issues with aux input on their cars?

I did some experimentation last night with the aux input on my Toyota, and it looks like the charge status might have something to do with it. Here are my findings:

- With the phone running off battery power, plugging the audio out into aux works. The phone sees the car as a regular set of headphones.

- With the phone charging, plugging the audio out into aux does not work. The phone sees the car as a headset, which triggers the random audio skips and voice dialer.

- If I plug into aux first, then charge, the phone still thinks it's hooked up to headphones and continues to work as normal.

This is just from five minutes of sitting in my car. I have a long drive ahead of me tonight and will try testing my "audio first, then charger" theory over more than 30 seconds of listening.

Same problem here, and it doesn't matter if it's charging or not. Works great with tape adapter in my car, but completely freaks out if I try using it with an aux plug in my wife's car. Icon in the notification bar changes too, with it showing a headset/microphone image if I have aux plug in, and just the headphones icon if I plug in the tape adapter.

Skips continuously, freezes Slacker or Pandora, Voice dialer keeps popping up, etc.

well, im hoping this is a software issue that is resolvable, it happens to me every once in awhile, but a simple unplug and plug it back in seems to fix it, not sure what that means, hopefully like i said before, its fixable one way or the other

Only works with a mic style jack

I have the same problems with a standard head set. I read somewhere to try a headset with a mic and it cured all the random problems. The jack is different than a standard 3.5mm, it has a 3rd black ring on it. My guess is the lack of this insulating ring on most 3.5mm jacks is causeing all of the issues by randomly triggering some of the mic functions in the Incredible.

More strangeness: it happened last night with regular headphones (a cheap pair of Sony earbuds I wear to bed). I was listening to Slacker and it started up ?, but only once. It kept the headset icon, but there was no further misbehavior.

Curiouser and curiouser...

This happened to me this morning when I plugged my sony headphones in... Just wanted to listen to some music while I was riding.... No go.

I DO have a pair of headphones with mic that I'll try when I get home tonight... This sucked, looks like I'm going to have to just use my ipod touch... :( Just hate carrying multiple devices...

same here with my 2009 corolla. Thought I was going mad as pandora would skip and jump and then tune wiki would start up as well skipping tracks every 5 seconds or so. I'll try this afternoon with the aux but not charging it to see if that helps. I'll try it later with my SHURE earbuds as well. It will really suck if I won't be able to use that quality headset.

Charging or not didn't seem to alter the results. But if I plugged it into the corolla before turning the car on, it would display the little headphones (not with mic) icon. If I plug in after the car has started I get the wonky results and the icon indicating a headset with a mic.

A quick update from me.... I DID purchase a set of stereo headphones that had a mike built in, for like 5 bucks on ebay, and although the sound quality kind of sucks, it DID work successfully.

SO I think finding some sort of adapter that can make it see the headphones, and NOT a mike, might just do the trick....

Time to pull soldering iron. ;-)

I think I'll try this on my way home from work this afternoon...
