my hubby's nexus 5 rarely gets more than two bars. is that common? quality doesn't seem affected in any way...

That's up to your carrier's coverage.
But if he has no problem with data and phone calls with only 2 bars than you should be fine.

I ended up going for the Note 3. just got it today....what sold me was the width of the phone. it is more comfortable to text on! seems like a great device. I am very excited.
