Hello everyone! First off, I promise I am no noob when it comes to rooting, I'm coming from the Optimus V to the Nexus. Anyway I have some general questions I was wondering if someone can answer for me before I decide to root.

1. Will rooting void my warranty? Or only if I unlock my boot loader?
2. Is there a way to root without unlocking the boot loader
3. Are there any Android apps that will auto-root for me?

Thanks in advanced!

2. You must unlock the bootloader in order to root.
1. Having answered number 2, unlocking the bootloader MAY void your warranty. Not a definite yes or no.
3. Wugs toolkit (stickied above in this subforum) can root for you. However, being a Nexus device it is stupid simple to root manually.

Edit: Wugs is a Windows program, not an android app. AFAIK, there are no apps that you can download to your phone that will root. You will need a computer to do so.

I stand corrected ^ (didn't even know that was out there). Though I'm failing to see much of a benefit to doing it this way. Not losing your data would be about the only thing beneficial from rooting without unlocking.

You do not have to unlock the bootloader to root.
A friend of mine was rooted for months before unlocking the bootloader.
Some people were even flashing ROMs with the bootloader still locked, and that was before the following thread.

It's an exploit that effectively temporarily unlocks it. So while you don't have an unlocked device, it functions effectively as a temporary unlock. Unless that's different than the one from a few months ago...
