I don't have an android, my son does, but he wants me to find out why the phone won't stay shut off while he's charging the battery. I was thinking of getting an android myself but maybe not after seeing the problems he's having. Does anyone know why the phone goes into sleep mode but will still notify him if he gets a call or text. I appreciate any help you can give me.

There's usually no reason to completely power down the phone while charging. If he really wants it to stay off, he needs to press and hold the power button until a menu comes up, then select the power off option. Otherwise, just short pressing the power button will put the phone to sleep, and allow it to receive calls and texts.

Welcome to AC!!

What B. Diddy said is correct. You will know it's working correctly because you should see information regarding the battery charging percentage.

Thanks for the info. Now the only problem is the battery will not take a charge for any length of time. He left it charging from last night at midnight till 7am this morning and the battery was only in the yellow. Again today, he bought a car charger and plugged it in at noon today. When he got home about 15 minutes ago he tried using it and within 5 minutes the battery was back on red. I suspect that he got a bad battery. Is that possible?

Bad battery or bad charger are possible. Was the phone purchased new or used? If used, then the battery could be old and spent. Replacement batteries are usually pretty cheap; check out Ebay.

It could be a bad battery/charger, or they could have GPS/WiFi on and screen brightness maxed out and a plethora of other things that eat up battery life. If all those were on and you were charging, that would happen.

I don't think car chargers charge as quickly as the wall chargers either. When I have my GPS on and my phone plugged into the car charger, it barely charges. So, if they had GPS on while they were in the car, it might not have charged much. Also, if he had it plugged into his car charger, and, the car wasn't on, it might not have charged.
