I swear I read someone here was able to get android-wifi-tether working on this phone. I've tried the bleeding edge version and all possible options, and all give me errors either setting softap or adhoc mode.

Anyone tried this?

Thanks!

Yeah, I did. And it worked last time I tried it.

Don't use the bleeding edge version. I think I am using 2.0.7.

OK, well after hacking some stuff, I can get an AP working without any kind of authentication. I had to:

Copy iptables_armv5 from the Droidwall program. (The current one was spitting out errors.)
Edit tether.edify to replace "mode ad-hoc" with "mode master"

The driver looks to prevent softap and ad-hoc modes. I'll look to compiling dhd.ko and see if this improves things. Found this page:

Issue 661 - android-wifi-tether - No communication in infrastructure mode on Samsung Intercept (SPH-M910) after proper SOFTAP enable - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

Would be great if other people could try this and verify I'm just not crazy. :)

I'd be more than happy to test it out if you posted clear step-by-step instructions of how to make it work. I don't know what Droidwall is and have no means of compiling android-wifi-tether with tether.edify edited.

Actually if you posted the APK I'd be more than happy to just test that. I'd be satisfied with an ad-hoc access point, but infrastructure would be a dream come true.

EDIT: Wait, found Droidwall in the market and I found iptables_armv5 in it, but I don't know where to put it. I can't get the android-wifi-tether app either, Android Marketplace says "This item is not available on your carrier," Thanks a lot, Verizon.

You guys need to seriously be careful about tethering. Especially now with all this CarrierIQ stuff being exposed.

Good luck fellas/ladies.

I am having the same ad hoc error issues. I am somewhat of a noob but would love to fix this. I rooted primarily for with wifi tether and need some more tips for anyone who has it working. I do have version 2.0.7 of android tether and have tried other versions and barnicle.

yea i download wifi tether v3.1 beta 7 my xbox 360 connects to my phone but i cant get my laptop to connect at all the app dose not even detect it even though on my laptop it just sits and tries to connect (i also tried barnacle and wifi tethering by open garden)

You can ignore the adhoc errors. It still works once it launches.

However, I can't get WEP encryption to work. You have to use access control if you want to keep people off of your connection.

As for finding out if Verizon knows, CIQ isn't on VZW phones, and even if they did find out, they can't do anything to you since the FCC clearly says tethering is okay on the 4G spectrum. It's part of the stipulation to use the 700Mhz Class C block. Yay FCC. :-)

I have tried a plethora of "tether" apps and have rooted my fair share of devices too, although i'm not KnightCrusader ;). I rooted my strat and tried these apps out, all give same error for adhoc. I can get the usb tethering to work with easytether pro, but no wifi or bluetooth tether yet. where do we go from here? is this because samsung set their android factory rom to not allow even SU requests to modify whatever value for this within the native tether programming that's builtin? Thanks for any assistance. :)

Barnacle works, with WEP encryption. It throws an error about ad-hoc mode or some bull but it works anyway.

My rooted Stratosphere runs wifi tether 2.0.7 just fine. Yes, there is an ad-hoc error message, but doesn't seem to interfere with usability. I am currently running the stock ROM with the KC's unsecured kernal for rooting...

I downloaded it directly from the dev site, and it installed just fine. No messing with heimdall, etc.
