Help ease my concerns...

Ok, so you are talking to a iphone user since the 1st gen, and each subsequent model (except for the 4s). Anyway, I am very seriously contemplating purchasing the HTC One X from AT&T. I have excellent coverage in my area (no LTE but I do have HSPDA). I checked out the phone in the retail store the other day, and I love it. I love the screen and I am excited about learning some more about Android. Here are my concerns though:

1 - I read where only 2GB is available for apps. Is that correct? I have some iphone apps that are close to 400MB. Do you guys see this as a serious issue? Can this allotment be changed to use the rest of the 9 GB?

I dont have unlimited data so the dropbox thing is nice, but I will have to be careful.

2 - of course you knew this was going to come up. The Galaxy S3. I will probably wait until they announce the specs, but odds are that is for the Internation version, correct? Plus, am I the only one that thinks touchwiz sucks? I played with a galaxy s2 in the store, and it felt like a kids toy. The animated wallpaper was terrible, and the UI was laggy.

Someone, anyone make me feel better so I can go ahead and make me preorder!

The S3 for the U.S. will most likely have a dual core that supports LTE. I am also an iPhone user for a few iterations, I have no worries about switching to the One X. From what I understand you will be able to move some/most apps to the 9GB portion, Phil has stated that in another thread.

Regarding point 1) Storage for apps...

Even though the One X does not have a microSD card, some apps still have the ability to be moved from internal storage (the 2gig region) to "Phone Storage". (the 16 or 32 gig area used by everything else. There appears to be no performance penalty for this, because its all high speed storage.

You can do this right in the App manager, where there is a tab at the top called "On Phone Storage". Any app eligible to be moved will appear there with a check box after it if its on the phone storage instead of the 2gig internal storage.

Note that not all of the app is eligible to move in some cases. Some apps leave a small portion in Internal Storage. Some apps can't be moved at all. Others prefer phone storage and get installed there whether you ask them to or not.

This saves some internal storage. Other than this you can not change the allotment.


Point 2:
I've bought my last Samsung phone for a while. Never happy with them. Any minor improvement in the HOX specs that Samsung could come up with are likely to be marginal, and probably off-set by it being a Samsung

I have the international version of the HTC One X. Not the LTE version. No LTE in my area.
I am getting a minimum of 19 hours on a single charge, using lots of wifi data, web surfing, music, phone calls, and email. 28 hrs max. And I don't shy away from using the device.

I have been all iPhone since the 3G (except for 4s). I preordered mine today in gray. I cannot wait to finally have a big screen.

For number 1 concern, Android handles application storage differently than an iphone. Android applications are generally between 5-10 mb's each. Some games, like Osmos HD are 40 mb. For games that have a large amount of data you download those in two parts. The first is the core application. For instance, Dead space. Dead space is about 8 mb. That 8 mb goes to the partitioned storage allocated to apps. Once you open the game, you then download the game info which goes into the normal storage. Again, for Dead Space, this is about 300 mb. I have over 120 apps on my GS2 and I still have over a gig open of the 2 gig's allocated to apps. So this should not be a concern unless you are going for the ATT version which only has 9.7 gb's of storage after the 2 gb of application storage and the memory allocated to the OS itself. To me, this is why the ATT version is castrated and I would get the international version only.

On the GS3. You are entitled to your opinion on Samsung phones. My GS2 is fantastic and its the only phone in the last 4 years that I have actually used for more than a year. Touch Wiz is subjective. I dont hate it, but I use Apex launcher which takes care of it completely. With the GS3 set to be announced this week, I would certainly be waiting to see whats it all about, but thats just me.

Again let me mention this android not apple. Android apps are smaller the 2gb is more then enough space for apps. Next with ics os moving apps to sdcard has gone away. And moving apps to SD causes issues. Next keep a charger handy even one of those portable charges work. .

Guys, thanks for the heads up. That makes sense that the two OS store the information differently. garment, I will be picking up the AT&T version one because with a new baby, the unlocked international version is a little tough to get past the wife

I hear ya man. I sold my 4S on ebay for $550 so the international version can be in my pocket and the wife will be none the wiser. Gotta have the storage.

That was one of my biggest factors for buying the international version. It has about 25GB of user storage. So much better than the 10 or so on the AT&T version.

The more I think about it I don't think the 10GB will be an issue for me at all. I'll maybe have 4-5 GB of pictures and videos and that's about it. I use Google Play for my music so that's not an issue either.

I just can't wait for this phone to hit!!!

Just preordered the gray one as well. Waiting for the GS3 or whatever it may be called was tempting but honestly I feel that even if the US gets the dual-core version it won't be any much faster than the One-X. Likely GPU-wise, but not enough to deal with Samsung and the eventual update issue. I have a iPhone 4S and the one major reason for buying the One-X was simply the display. It is superior to the 4S. A lot. I love the bigger real estate. And Sense flew- much more than on my Inspire, which I loved.

When I get mine I am going to swipe down the notifications bar and turn off mobile data. I'm in extremely fast wifi all day long. I only use it on the road and I usually bluetooth to the car. It's why I got the lowest data-plan and I will use Drop Box quite a bit and already do.

I'll echo what Icebike said. I'll move large apps to phone storage and I very much agree with his sentiments on Samsung. That said, I do think that this phone will have vastly improved build quality. It's the game changer now among Android devices.

So, after playing with the phone in the store and hearing everyone talking about it, i decided to preorder the phone from Amazon.com. I was pumped that I had finally made a decision

Only to come in to work this morning and see that Radio Shack had dropped the price to 50 for preordering on the main line of a family account! Well, i called amazon and they matched the price, so no harm no foul. $50 for this phone is a steal!
